Comparing New Democracies: Transition and Consolidation in Mediterranean Europe and the Southern Cone
Political Attitudes in Venezuela: Societal Cleavages and Political Opinion
Here is a benchmark study of voter attitudes in a Latin American country. This volume is based on extensive survey research conducted during the Venezuelan elections of 1973. The methods employed by Baloyra and Martz to poll an "unpollable" society successfully challenge previously established paradigms. The authors interviewed a representative sample of over 1,500 voters to determine relationships between class, status, community, context, relig…
Conflict and Change in Cuba
Conflict and Change in Cuba
Today Castro's regime appears vulnerable to breakdown. His government cannot deliver the minimum amounts of foodstuffs guaranteed in citizens' rationing cards, and the achievements of the Revolution -- including full employment, access to education, and quality health care -- are increasingly compromised. Amid the government's deterioration, questions abound about just what will happen next: will the 'fidelista' regime finesse its survival or wil…

Polyclonal antibody generation in rabbit by administration of an Organophosphorus Acid Anhydrolase (Opaa) from squid
When a nerve gas hydrolyzing enzyme [organophosphorus acid anhydrolase (OPAA), formerly DFPase] purified from squid hepatopancreas was injected into rabbits, the resulting sera (RAS) inhibited OPAA purified from either squid hepatopancreas or squid optic ganglia. The inhibition was non-competitive, with 50% inhibition at a 1:1,000 serum dilution, and with the limit of inhibition (in effect, a "titer") at approximately 1:10,000. This RAS did not i…

Salvaging El Salvador
Salvaging El Salvador Enrique A. Baloyra (bio) When Alfredo Cristiani, the candidate of the right-wing National Republican Alliance (ARENA), won election to the presidency of El Salvador in March 1989, many observers feared that hopes for peace and democracy in that war-torn country would have to be postponed indefinitely, if not abandoned altogether. The actual course of events, however, has belied these grim expectations. A series of wide-rangi…

Negotiating War in El Salvador: The Politics of Endgame
Important changes occurred in El Salvador between the parley of government and guerrilla representatives at La Palma (15 October 1984) and the exchange of kidnapped government officials for imprisoned and wounded guerrillas (24 October 1985). During that year Salvadoran politics entered into the endgame of a political transition that may yet culminate in a democratic consolidation. Reaching the endgame stage of the transition hinged on the outcom…
Central America on the Reagan Watch: Rhetoric and Reality
This essay discusses the Central America policies of the Reagan administration, focusing on the evolution of what has been described as a "two-track" approach to the region. The essay disputes this characterization, describing the emergence of an unstable equilibrium between different policy objectives and their proponents, underlining important differences between official rhetoric and specific initiatives, and evaluating the outcomes of those i…

Criticism, Cynicism, and Political Evaluation: A Venezuelan Example
Political trust and political efficacy are concepts currently undergoing considerable discussion and revision. The discussion of voting behavior in Campbell et al. (1954), Almond's and Verba's (1965) version of the participation hypothesis, Gamson's (1968) trust-efficacy hypothesis, and Verba's and Nie's (1972) standard socioeconomic model represent quite distinct and contrasting stages in the treatment of these concepts, but share some assumptio…
Electoral Mobilization and Public Opinion: The Venezuelan Campaign of 1973
This first volume in a larger study of political participation and attitudes in Venezuela focuses on the mobilization of public opinion in the 1973 campaign. Data is drawn from personal observation, interviews with party elites, and a nation-wide survey. Six months of travel with the major presidential candidates provides insight into the strategy, tactics, and personalities of the campaign, and the survey offers a wealth of information on the at…

Culture, Regionalism, and Political Opinion in Venezuela

Oil Policies and Budgets in Venezuela, 1938-1968
Some Historians and Political Scientists have Probably Passed Each other on their way to incorporate the paraphernalia of their respective disciplines. The historians are showing greater interest in theoretical questions and a growing methodological sophistication. The political scientists have begun to test their models against well-known events which have been previously researched by the historians. Obviously, this trend is no harbinger of dis…

Politics and Development in Venezuela
The story of democracy in Venezuela is well known; the main events have been identified and described in detail, the more relevant and contradictory interpretations of these events have been argued repeatedly by Venezuelan scholars, and many foreign-language commentators have made these facts and interpretations available to an international audience. This being the case, one must evaluate any new contributions in terms of two criteria: Does the …
