The use of the Xultun Lunar Table in the Lunar Series at Yaxchilan
As is known, Yaxuun B’ahlam IV [1], also known as Bird Jaguar IV, acceded to the throne of Yaxchilan on 9.16.1.0.0 11 Ajaw 8 Sek (April 29, 752). This date marks the end of the first tun after k’atun ending at 9.16.0.0.0 [2]. This critical date is recorded on at least six monuments at Yaxchilán [3]. Interestingly, Stela 11 displays twice this accession date on the base panel and a lateral side. Curiously, the date of accession is followed by two …

Ah ch'ibal canob: Rethinking celestial animals in the Paris Codex 23-24
Pages 23 and 24 of the Post-Classic Paris Codex contain figures of thirteen celestial beasts interpreted as Maya zodiacal constellations. Traditional scholarship has long attempted to identify those animals with Western zodiacal constellations. Assuming this is correct, it would mean the Maya had chosen thirteen figures or names to represent groupings of stars located on or near the ecliptic. Thus, contrary to twelve Western (Greek-Roman) zodiaca…
Life under the starry sky is a collection of papers covering much of the most recent research in Latin American cultural astronomy. The contributors explore the astronomical knowledge and beliefs of Native American peoples, their importance for daily affairs, and reconstruct ancient calendrical and astronomical computations. This book is of particular interest to astronomers, historians, anthropologists and archaeologists, amateur astronomers, cu…
Forty-Four Years of Polish Archaeoastronomical Research in Latin America
Since the late 1980s, there has been a considerable growth in the numer of Polish contributions to the Latin American archaeoastronomy. Much of this interest in archaeoastronomy is an outcome of the scientific activities of Professor Andrzej Wiercinski who in the 1970s was fascinated with the claims for sophisticated Megalithic astronomy advocated by early British archaeoastronomers. The paper provides a brief description of the greatest Polish a…
Rethinking Nahualac, Iztaccíhuatl, Mexico: Between Animism to Analogism in Mesoamerican Archaeoastronomy
The site of Nahualac (3890-3920 m asl) is situated on the western slopes of Iztaccihuatl, a well-known volcano in Central Mexico. It consists of a rectangular stone sanctuary located within the seasonally active small lagoon, and the distinct area where multiple deposits of ritual pottery were found. The piles of stone situated on the borders of the lagoon produce alignments towards the nearby and distant landforms offering broad vistas towards t…
The Starry Deer Caiman and Structure 44 at Yaxchilan, Chiapas, Mexico
This paper analyses the meaning of astronomical alignments of Structure 44 from Yaxchilan, Mexico. The lack of direct solar referents calls for a more integrative approach in which archaeoastronomy is supplemented by the research fields of archaeology, epigraphy and iconography. The designation of Structure 44 as an otoot (dwelling, house) building allows us to conceptualize it as a type of animate entity which is linked with the representation o…

The power of the dead in Neolithic landscapes: An agricultural-celestial metaphor in the funerary tradition of the Funnel Beaker Culture in the Sandomierz Upland
FBC earthen long barrows were roughly oriented along the East-West axis, with deviations not exceeding the frame of the solar arc. Also, the Sandomierz Group monuments display this general pattern. The paper brings together archaeoastronomy, landscape archaeology and symbolic archaeology

Archaeology and Archaeoastronomy of Mount Tlaloc, Mexico: A Reconsideration
This paper reevaluates the architectural remains atop Mount Tlaloc in light of recent contributions by Aveni et al. (1988), Broda (1989, 1991a, 1991b), and Townsend (1991). Evidence suggests that there were at least two phases of architectural activity on the mountain. An archaeoastronomical analysis of the ceremonial enclosure leads to the suggestion that the orientation of the structure reveals a paradigm marking out specific days by denoting p…
