    Open Access•Beate Elvebakk•ARTICLE•Science & Technology Studies•2018

In 2004, the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board (AIBN), previously restricted to civil aviation, was expanded to include a new section for road traffic, which was to investigate individual road accidents. The overall ambition behind the new organisation was to reduce the number of fatalities in road traffic. This article explores the idea that the main task of the Accident Investigation Board’s section for road traffic was to construct a new …

  • Introduction

Mari Hvattum, Brita Brenna et al.•CHAPTER•Routes, Roads and Landscapes•2016

In his 1780s bestseller Theorie der Gartenkunst, C.C.L. Hirschfeld declared that ‘[t]he foremost purpose of the path is to conduct us to notable scenes with no need for retracing one’s steps’. Unconcerned with its more mundane uses, Hirschfeld considered the path an aesthetic orchestration – a device for seeing and experiencing the landscape:[...] the paths allow not only for the enjoyment of variations and diverseness but also for the most advan…

  • What is an Academic Journal? Problems Associated with the Transition to Electronic Publishing

    Open Access•Beate Elvebakk•ARTICLE•Science & Technology Studies•2010

The article is based on interviews with the subject specialists employed at the University Library in Oslo in 2005, and describes the discussion surrounding the introduction of an “e-only” policy for academic journals, and the opposition it met, especially among the subject specialists from the humanities. Open Access•Beate Elvebakk•ARTICLE•First Monday•2008

This article compares the individuals categorized as 20th century philosophers in Wikipedia with the selection found in two major edited and widely used online philosophy resources, The Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (plato.stanford.edu), and the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (www.iep.utm.edu). These are both free online resources, but unlike Wikipedia, they are written and edited by members of the academic community, and thus sanctio…

  • Vision Zero

    Beate Elvebakk•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 4

In Norway and Sweden, road safety work is now supposed to be based on Vision Zero – a long‐term vision of a road system that does not lead to fatalities or permanent injury. In this article, this safety platform is examined in some detail, and I maintain that the vision involves a redefining of actors, as well as re‐allocation of roles and responsibilities in the road system, and is based on a spatial redistribution of relationships. I also argue…

  • Virtually competent? Competence and experience with Internet-based technologies among European parliamentarians

    Beate Elvebakk•ARTICLE•Information Polity•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This article tries to determine the levels of experience and competence with the Internet among MPs in seven European countries, and to provide explanations for the differences found. The main objective of the article is to see whether the kinds of experience and skills that the MPs possess serve as a basis for important structural changes in the European democracies. Unsurprisingly, the survey shows that MPs in Northern Europe tend to use the In…
