  • Up the moral pedestal: How self-image and self-beliefs fuel social action

Open Access•Chloe Webb, Nicholas J Kelley et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2026

We examine how moral outrage can promote perceived capacity for social change through the psychological mechanism of moral self-enhancement. Across four studies (N = 1300), we show that morally outraged individuals often engage in downward moral comparison, enhancing their sense of moral character relative to transgressors. This self-enhancement strengthens participatory efficacy, that is, beliefs in one’s capacity to enact change. In turn, heigh…

  • Narcissism and Wellbeing: A Cross-Cultural Meta-Analysis

Open Access•C Sedikides, Yixin Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2026

Do narcissists enjoy better or worse wellbeing than others? Psychological theories disagree. In an attempt to reconcile them, we conducted a comprehensive cross-cultural meta-analysis testing the core hypotheses that grandiose narcissism would be associated with better wellbeing and vulnerable narcissism with worse wellbeing. We also hypothesized that these associations would be explained by self-esteem and would be stronger in countries higher o…

  • On the Nature of Nostalgia: A Psychological Perspective

    Open Access•C Sedikides, Tim Wildschut•ARTICLE•Emotion Review•2025

We raise issues about the philosophical claims made in this article regarding the nature of nostalgia. Drawing on psychological research, we contend that nostalgia is rooted in memory rather than time, is directed toward specific objects rather than being object-free, is predominantly positive rather than a form of mourning, and is focused on the past rather than the present or future

  • Narcissism Is Associated With Blunted Error‐Related Brain Activity

Open Access•Esther M Robins, Zhiwei Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2025

OBJECTIVE: Narcissism is associated with self-enhancement and social antagonism, yet its neural underpinnings, particularly in error processing, remain underexplored. Competing theoretical models, such as the mask model and the metacognitive model, offer conflicting hypotheses regarding how narcissism influences early neural responses to errors. We examine whether grandiose agentic narcissism relates to an elevated or blunted error-related negati…

  • Authenticity, Well-Being, and Minority Stress in LGB Individuals: A Scoping Review

    Open Access•Emily R Roberts, Martha F Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2025

In general (i.e. in heteronormative and cisgendered samples), authenticity appears protective against threats to well-being. Authenticity may also, in part, protect well-being against the minority stressors experienced by sexually minoritized (LGB; lesbian, gay, and bisexual) individuals. In this scoping review, we examined the relation between authenticity and well-being in LGB samples experiencing minority stress. We hypothesized that (i) LGB m…

  • There is a party in my head and no one is invited: Resting‐state electrocortical activity and solitude

    Open Access•Chengli Huang, James W Butterworth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 118

OBJECTIVE: What are the motivational underpinnings of solitude? We know from self-report studies that increases in solitude are associated with drops in approach motivation and rises in avoidance motivation, but only when solitude is experienced as non-self-determined (i.e., non-autonomous). However, the extent to which individual differences in solitude relate to neurophysiological markers of approach-avoidance motivation derived from resting-st…

  • Testing the underlying structure of unfounded beliefs about Covid-19 around the world

    Paweł Brzóska, Magdalena Żemojtel-Piotrowska et al.•ARTICLE•Thinking & Reasoning•2024

Unfounded—conspiracy and health—beliefs about COVID-19 have accompanied the pandemic worldwide. Here, we examined cross-nationally the structure and correlates of these beliefs with an 8-item scale, using a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. We obtained a two-factor model of unfounded (conspiracy and health) beliefs with good internal structure (average CFI = 0.98, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.04), but a high correlation between the two factors (…

  • Food-evoked nostalgia

    Chelsea A Reid, Niko Schvarz et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2023

In three studies, we examined food as an elicitor of nostalgia. Study 1 participants visualised eating either a nostalgic or regularly consumed food. Study 2 participants visualised consuming 12 foods. Study 3 participants consumed 12 flavour samples. Following their food experiences, all participants responded to questions regarding the profile of food-evoked nostalgia (i.e. autobiographical relevance, arousal, familiarity, positive and negative…

  • A tri‐directional examination of adolescent personality, perceived parenting, and economic and parental adversity contexts in influencing adolescent behavioral outcomes

    Open Access•Tayler E Truhan, C Sedikides et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2023

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent personality is consistently linked to behavioral strengths and difficulties. However, most of this work is limited in that it does not consider personality beyond the Big Five or economic or parental adversity contexts. The Tri-Directional Framework of Parent and Offspring Traits and Outcomes highlights the collective influence of personality, parenting, and context on offspring behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Parent and ad…

  • Benefits of nostalgia in vulnerable populations

    Open Access•Tim Wildschut, C Sedikides•ARTICLE•European Review of Social…•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered and exacerbated psychological distress, and exposed psychological vulnerabilities, in large swathes of the population. Under challenging circumstances, nostalgia may convey tangible psychological and physical health benefits. We review recent evidence for nostalgia’s utility in vulnerable populations, including sojourners and immigrants, civil war refugees, people suffering bereavement, people facing a limited …

  • The psychological benefits of music-evoked nostalgia

Open Access•C Sedikides, Joost M Leunissen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2022

We provide a narrative review of the nascent literature on the psychological benefits of music-evoked nostalgia. Music is a prevalent and influential source of nostalgia. Music-evoked nostalgia confers approach-oriented psychological benefits in the social domain (by fostering social connectedness), self-oriented domain (by raising self-esteem, instilling a sense of youthfulness, elevating optimism, and enhancing inspiration), and existential dom…

  • Insofar as You Can Be Part of Me: The Influence of Intrusive Parenting on Young Adult Children's Couple Identity

Claudia Manzi, Miriam Parise et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2015

What is the role of family of origin in the formation of couple identity (i.e., considering couplehood as central to one's sense of self) among young adults? Two studies tested and supported the hypothesis that intrusive parenting hinders the couple identity of young adults. In Study 1, intrusive parenting was associated with weaker couple identity in a sample of 702 dating partners (351 couples). In Study 2, intrusive parenting was linked to a c…

  • Nostalgia: Content, triggers, functions

Tim Wildschut, C Sedikides et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2006•Cited by: 148•References: 9

Seven methodologically diverse studies addressed 3 fundamental questions about nostalgia. Studies 1 and 2 examined the content of nostalgic experiences. Descriptions of nostalgic experiences typically featured the self as a protagonist in interactions with close others (e.g., friends) or in momentous events (e.g., weddings). Also, the descriptions contained more expressions of positive than negative affect and often depicted the redemption of neg…
