  • Silcrete quarries and artefact distribution in the Central Queensland Highlands, Eastern Australia

    Open Access•John A Webb, John Webb et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2013•Cited by: 13•References: 53

A geoarchaeological study of silcrete in the Central Queensland Highlands highlights the importance of geological context in understanding the procurement, use and transport of artefacts. This study shows, by focusing on a newly discovered silcrete quarry, that silcrete formed beneath basalt by silicification of stream sediments and underlying sandstone. Silcrete outcrops are largely restricted to cliffs where the base of the basalt is exposed, n…

  • Heat treatment of Polish flints

    Open Access•Marian Domański, Marian M Domanski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2009•Cited by: 37•References: 6

  • A Review of Heat Treatment Research

Marian Domański, Marian M Domanski et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2007

The recognition of intentional heat treatment of stone artifacts in the archaeological record has been a major research topic since the initial study by Crabtree and Butler (1964). Ethnographic and archaeological records reveal two methods of intentional thermal alteration: controlled heat treatment most commonly used to enhance the flaking quality of stone, and thermal shock fracturing often applied to produce angular facets on rounded nodules o…

  • Source to discard: Patterns of lithic raw material procurement and use in Sturt National Park, northwestern New South Wales

    Open Access•Trudy Doelman, John A Webb et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2001•Cited by: 44•References: 44

Sturt National Park, located in arid Northwestern New South Wales, has an abundance of stone sources occurring as outcrops and pavements of rounded cobbles (gibber); the flaking quality of the silcrete varies according to its geological characteristics. Detailed studies have focused on the procurement and use of these silcrete sources using a quarry and two nearby lithic scatters in the Stud Creek catchment. The results show that quarry location …

  • Flaking properties, petrology and use of Polish flint

    Open Access•Marian Domański, Marian M Domanski et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2000•Cited by: 10•References: 11

The technical and aesthetic qualities of the many varieties of Polish flint utilized from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age are analysed and assessed, and show how different flints were selected for different purposes

  • Effect of heat treatment on siliceous rocks used in prehistoric lithic technology

    Open Access•Marian Domański, Marian M Domanski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1992•Cited by: 61•References: 3
