Early Bronze Age copper smelting furnaces from Chrysokamino, Crete
During the Early Bronze Age, before the expansion in copper mining and distribution of this metal from Cyprus, Aegean metal production relied especially on local ores. An example of this industry has been excavated from only a few sites in the Aegean. One of these smelting workshops has been excavated at Chrysokamino in eastern Crete. Its smelting furnaces provide a good example of the technology in use at early copper production centers in the A…
Ancestors of the Minoan sword: Early Minoan IB long daggers from Hagia Photia, Crete
The long sword, a weapon first known in the Aegean Bronze Age from Middle Minoan Crete (early second millennium BC), represented the culmination of a long period of development. Several problems in both casting and forging had to be solved before the production of large implements like swords could be achieved. Very early experiments with long weapons come from Early Minoan IB Crete, early in the third millennium BC. Examples from the cemetery at…

Excavations in the Hagios Charalambos Cave: A Preliminary Report
The cave of Hagios Charalambos is a Minoan secondary ossuary in the Lasithi plain in the mountains of east-central Crete. It was excavated in two campaigns (1976-1983 and 2002-2003). Artifacts include pottery, figurines, seals, stone tools, metal tools and weapons, jewelry, and other objects buried with the deceased. The original burials range in date from Neolithic to Middle Minoan IIB, but the bones were all moved to the ossuary within a relati…

This is the fourth volume in a series of final publications on the joint American-Greek archaeological excavations at Pseira in northeast Crete. The site is a seaport dating from the end of the Final Neolithic until the Late Minoan period. Pseira IV publishes the architecture and associated finds from 39 locations in Areas B, C, D, and F in the Minoan town of Pseira. The Bronze Age settlement is located on Pseira Island, off the coast of Crete in…

Carbon-14 and the Beginning of the Late Bronze Age in the Aegean
The evidence for the absolute dating of the initial phases of the Aegean Late Bronze Age is presented and analyzed. Aegean radiocarbon dates for the second millennium B.C. show an internally consistent pattern. They indicate a close correlation with the traditional chronological patterns for the later stages of the Bronze Age (particularly for LH IIIB), but there are major discrepancies at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age, and the dates for L…

The end of the Greek Bronze Age
Many scholars have examined the changes that occurred in Greek life around the twelfth century BC. After a period of great prosperity during Late Helladic III B, there followed an era of war, uncertainty, and cultural disintegration that was part of a general upheaval extending from Italy to the Near East. In Greece the disruption was especially pronounced, and many areas were left relatively unpopulated. The ensuing 'Dark Age' witnessed the birt…

Some Chronological Problems in the Middle Minoan Dark-on-Light Pottery of Eastern Crete
Three motifs used in eastern Crete during the Middle Minoan period are catalogued and discussed. Their presence in datable deposits is used to establish the development of the individual motifs and the progression of the style as a whole. Triple plumes were used from MM IA until MM III (or slightly later); linked discs were employed from MM IA until LM IB; discs and loops are only known from MM III/LM IA. There was little appreciable change in th…

Pseira III: The Plateia Building
The Pseira project began in 1985. Excavations were conducted from 1986 to 1991 as an American-Greek collaboration directed by Philip P. Betancourt and Costis Davaras. The Plateia Building (Building BS/BV) is located at the north of the Town Square or Plateia. It occupies the entire northern side of the square, with one room built on the eastern side as well. The structure is the largest building excavated at Pseira. The building was discovered by…
