  • Who Wants to Become a Role Model? Personal Narratives of Success and Internal Dynamics of Change in Nairobi’s Ghettos

    Jean-Baptiste Lanne, Marie-Emmanuelle Pommerolle•ARTICLE•The African Review•2024

This article contributes to an understanding of the internal dynamics of change in Nairobi’s ghettos (Kenya). Spaces of relegation for the urban poor, referred to by our interlocutors as “ghettos”, are often portrayed either as objects of international interventionism or as deprived areas neglected by national or metropolitan policies. We argue that social and material change in these spaces can be conceptualised at the interface between personal…

  • Unravelling the “Ethos of Change” in African Urban Margins: Institutions, Stigmas, Experiences

    Open Access•F A Badurdeen, Jean-Baptiste Lanne et al.•ARTICLE•The African Review•2024

How are desirable futures conceived in the African urban margins? What trajectories do individuals use to get there? And who decides what constitutes a desirable future? This special issue proposes the “ethos of change” as an analytical concept to better understand how urban margins in Africa shape specific lives and, in particular, aspirations for change. “Ethos of change” is a broad set of embodied norms, (self) narratives, and routine practice…

  • I can't segregate myself: Self-narrating and 'small boundary' work in Nairobi's ghettos

    Open Access•Jean-Baptiste Lanne, Marie-Emmanuelle Pommerolle•ARTICLE•Africa•2024

This article explores the trajectories and narratives of people who have exited marginalized urban spaces in Nairobi to move through other social spaces in the city, or abroad. Claiming to belong to the 'ghetto', an idiom that refers to both a local space of exclusion and a globalized cultural and political imaginary, our interlocutors embrace the contradictions of this belonging in their everyday experiences. The careers they have built in diffe…

  • Poetry Writing and the Dialectic of Closeness. Creative Encounters with Nairobi Urban Sentinels

    Jean-Baptiste Lanne•ARTICLE•GeoHumanities•2021•References: 13

This article provides reflexive feedback on a four hands poetry writing experiment as a field method for fostering expression in people unaccustomed to it. To complement my in-depth interviews with private security guards at the gates of fenced residences in Nairobi (Kenya), I conducted several poetry workshops with them between 2015 and 2017. Although this medium is no more authentic than conventional storytelling, poetry as a four hands practic…

  • Emotions from and beyond the classroom. An experiment in teaching and sharing emotional methodologies in a geography course

    Pauline Guinard, Jean-Baptiste Lanne•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This paper is based on an experiment conducted in 2019 at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, as part of a post-graduate research course, that aimed to reflect on the methodologies used by geographers when (re)searching (for) emotions. This methodological question is crucial since it is partly because of the difficulty of finding relevant tools to study emotions that geographers – especially in France – have tended to neglect them, both in the…
