  • Reconstructing the Old Palace Landscape of Benin City, Nigeria

    Open Access•Tomos Llywelyn Evans•ARTICLE•History in Africa•2026•References: 5

Unbeknownst to many in the fields of African history and archaeology, the South African archaeologist A. J. H. Goodwin conducted important research in Nigeria during the last decade of his life, from 1953 to 1957. Following work at the Yoruba town of Ile-Ife, Goodwin led the first systematic excavations in Benin City in 1954–55 and 1956–57. With little of this material ever published, this article outlines, analyzes, and discusses Goodwin’s archi…

  • Reopening the archives of archaeology at Ile-Ife, Nigeria

    Open Access•Tomos Llywelyn Evans•ARTICLE•Afriques•2025

In 1953, the archaeologists Bernard Fagg and A.J.H. Goodwin excavated sacred grove sites in Ile-Ife, south-western Nigeria, where they hoped to uncover artefactual and stratigraphic evidence of the town’s early history. They were especially interested in developing artefact typologies and chronologies, as part of the systematisation of archaeology in Africa during this period. But far from primordial places conserving undisturbed records of past …

  • Collecting copper alloy portrait heads

Open Access•Tomos Llywelyn Evans•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2024

Much has been written about the spectacular naturalistic copper and copper alloy heads of Wúnmọníjẹ̀ Compound, Ilé-Ifẹ̀, Nigeria, which stunned the art world after they were unearthed in 1938, on the cusp of the Second World War. However, little scholarly attention has been afforded to the controversial aftermath of their discovery, when multiple foreign parties endeavoured to collect and export many of them from Nigeria, while legislation to pro…

  • Debating the Bascom controversy

    Open Access•Tomos Llywelyn Evans•ARTICLE•Africa•2024•Cited by: 1

In 1937-38, the American doctoral candidate William R. Bascom conducted anthropological research in the sacred Yorùbá city of Ilé-Ifẹ̀, Nigeria. Bascom's visit was a decisive moment in the history of African art, as, in 1938, he observed the chance discovery of unique copper and copper alloy heads, two of which he acquired and exported to the USA. Bascom's actions in 1938, and his subsequent conflicts with British officials who demanded the retur…

  • A Copper Alloy Head Count
