    Fabian Krautwald•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2026•References: 22

Historians have drawn on newspapers to illuminate the origins of modern nationalism and cultures of literacy. The case of Kiongozi (The Guide or The Leader) relates this scholarship to Tanzania's colonial past. Published between 1904 and 1916 by the government of what was then German East Africa, the paper played an ambivalent role. On the one hand, by promoting the shift from Swahili written in Arabic script ( ajami ) to Latinized Swahili, it be…

  • Constructing the State

Open Access•Alexander De Juan, Fabian Krautwald et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2017•Cited by: 14•References: 28

How do states build a security apparatus after violent resistance against state rule? This article argues that in early periods of state building two main factors shape the process: the macro-strategic goals of the state and administrative challenges of personnel management. These dynamics are studied in the context of the establishment of police forces in the settler colony of German Southwest Africa, present-day Namibia. The empirical analysis …
