Music, masculinities, and violence: A fluid state of dominance in contemporary music
This article examines the cultural representations emerging from the songs that dominate contemporary Italian music weekly charts, based on qualitative research conducted over a six-year period (2018–2023). The focus is on the representations of masculinity and violence, both intimate and broader forms, expressed in these lyrics, aiming to understand the role violence plays in shaping gender identities and interpersonal relationships. Viewed as b…
Attraverso l…
Migrants' descendants in Italy: Experiences and representations in the research. A literature review
Migrants' descendants have always attracted the attention of social research, particularly in the field of migration studies. Indeed, their condition on the edge between cultural and political containers makes them central subjects in the analysis of migration processes and outcomes. For over twenty years, Italian studies have also focused on this social group, producing numerous - and sometimes disconnected - studies. The literature review draws…
Young women, dating apps, and affective assemblages in the time of pandemic: No relationship is a linear transition to a fixed point
The article aims to explore the centrality in young women’s life of the affective assemblages that took shape in their relationship with digital media during the pandemic, particularly fostered by the use of dating apps. Emotional and affective connection is and has been prevented by the pandemic in the form of physical distancing and the risk of contagion, but also by regulations that in some states, such as Italy, have only recognised legitimat…
Male and Female Violence in Popular Media
Elisa Giomi and Sveva Magaraggia propose that men engage in violent conduct at a higher rate than women because they are socially and culturally ‘programmed’ to do so. Popular culture representations play a crucial role in this process: TV series, films, pop music and videos, advertising commercials and tabloids all tend to ‘normalise’ violence against women as an allegedly natural inclination of males. Violent women, on the other hand, are belie…
Create Solidarity Networks: Dialogs in Reddit to Overcome Depression and Suicidal Ideation among Males
The emerging scientific literature examines masculinity and gender roles as risk factors for suicide ideation or suicide in young adults and adolescents. In this vein, recent studies show that certain traditional masculine norms are related to poorer mental health-related outcomes, which influences suicide and suicide ideation. This study contributes with new understandings about the associations between masculinity and suicidal ideation among ma…
In Transition … Where to? Rethinking Life Stages and Intergenerational Relations of Italian Youth
This article wants to contribute to the ongoing debate within youth studies about the frameworks and concepts that inform research on the meanings of and transitions into adulthood. It aims to contribute to debates about the changing nature of life stages and the need for new conceptual categories and definitions of adulthood and of intergenerational relations. Thus, the first question that drives our reflections is: How do the radical transforma…
Beyond bruised faces and invisible men? Changes in social advertising on male violence against women in Italy
This paper examines how male violence against women is represented in Italian advertisements. It focuses on the recent developments in social and commercial campaigns, showing their connection to broader changes in the public discourse on gender-based violence. The analysis builds on the assumption that effective social advertising should promote a paradigm shift to reflect the complexity of the phenomenon and encourage a different social percept…
Double Yes’ for Whom? Gender Innovation in Italian Families
This paper analyses gender relations in Italy with an emphasis on work–life balance. Despite the fact that the expression ‘double yes’—meaning yes to participation in the labour market and yes to motherhood—has recently become a popular and optimistic thesis in several Italian public debates on women at work, realities are more complex. Discussions on the work–life balance enable us to better understand the full scope of labour relations by consi…
Tensions between fatherhood and the social construction of masculinity in Italy
The article examines how fathers' attempts to establish intimate relationships with their young children (0-3 years) bring to light tensions between prevailing models of fatherhood and hegemonic masculinity. The result of these contradictory negotiations is a complex redefinition of what it means to be a father today, whereby aspects of both past experiences and new social expectations are accepted and rejected. The article approaches gender as a…

Teenage parenthood: What's the problem
Gender and women’s studies in Italy: Looking back to look forward
Between the 1970s and the 1990s, women’s studies research and theoretical confrontations became common both inside and outside Italian universities, producing a substantial cultural and scientific inheritance. However, the teaching of such content had to follow an accidental path deprived of any institutional visibility. Women’s studies was forced to adapt itself to existing didactic structures, ‘hidden’ inside single courses and single disciplin…

The chief topics that emerged from this discussion include the feminization of labour, feminist practices and methodologies, representation/participation, and guaranteed income. Here, we give as much space as possible to the diverse vo…
