Sex, gender, sexuality and orientation in biomedical research articles on intersex variations
This article examines how biomedical research articles construct sex, gender, sexuality and sexual orientation in relation to intersex variations. We analyse 368 biomedical articles (approximately 1.3 million words) from PubMed spanning 1950–2020, comparing publications before and after the 2006 ‘Chicago Consensus’ statement that introduced the terminology ‘disorders of sex development’ (DSD). Using multidimensional analysis and corpus-assisted d…

Climate change in the UK press
This article examines the discourses around climate change in the UK press from 2003 to 2019. Our main goal is to investigate how the media discourse developed during a period of significant world events, whilst also exploring the change in the UK public’s perception of the problem. We combine the novel technique of Usage Fluctuation Analysis (UFA, McEnery et al. 2019) with corpus-assisted discourse analysis to track the fluctuation in the usage …

Mediating climate politics
This article examines the centrality of Brazil within the future of climate policy and politics. The state of the carbon sink of the Amazon rainforest has long been an iconic marker of the condition of the Earth. Brazil has been innovative in developing many non-carbon forms of energy generation and use and it has played a major role in international debates on global warming since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. We examine various ways in which cl…
A quantitative approach to compare collocational patterns in translated and non‐translated texts
The primary objective of this paper is to propose a corpus-based research methodology for comparing quantitative aspects of collocational patterning in translated and non-translated texts of the same language. The main issue under investigation is whether collocational patterns tend to be less diverse (i.e. reduced in range) in translated than non-translated texts. A pilot study is carried out with a view to examining the overall number of colloc…
Towards a corpus-based research methodology for investigating lexical patterning in translated texts
The primary objective of this article is to propose a corpus-based research methodology for comparing collocational patterning in translated and non-translated language. The analysis is based on a comparable corpus of Brazilian Portuguese which consists of two separate sub-corpora: one made up of translated Brazilian Portuguese and another consisting of non-translated Brazilian Portuguese. Both subcorpora are designed according to the same criter…
