Evangelism as Frame Intrusion
This paper uses Goffman's notion of frame to examine the attempts by evangelical Christians to win converts through witnessing in public places. Such witnessing involves frame intrusion: an agent seeking to move a potential convert from one frame to another by introducing a new set of claims into an on-going situation. The techniques and problems of frame intrusion are discussed in the context of evangelical versus civil frames. More sensitivity …
The Myth of Ritual
With Good Heart
Muriel Painter's account of Yaqui beliefs and ceremonies is based on her firsthand observations over the course of four decades. By the time Painter died in 1974, she was as familiar with Yaqui culture as on outsider could be and left behind the manuscript from which this volume arose. It was reviewed before the original publication in 1986 by a Yaqui committee and edited for publication by Edward Spicer
In the Crawlspace of the Organization
Although Goffman advocated comparative study of underlife at the time that he wrote Asylums, little work has been done by students of organization. The present paper offers a comparison of underlife in three different types of establishment by focusing on "crawlspace," those symbolic dimensions of organization which allow or compel participants to engage in secondary adjustment. The important dimensions are assumptions about self, normative patte…

Underlife in a Baptist Church
Contemporary Sociological Theory
Leadership, Democracy, and Religion
This paper presents an analysis of the ambiguity in role definition of pastors of Southern Baptist churches. Attention is focused on the socialization process whereby clergy develop an authoritarian self-image, as well as on the interplay between religious understanding and democratic organization. The problem of ambiguous role definition becomes operative in situations where the congregation is unwilling to follow pastoral initiative, and requir…
Notes on Pastoral Power in the Congregational Tradition
This paper uses Harrison's rational-pragmatic authority as a model to organize results of participant observation of two Southern Baptist Churches. The findings contradict notions that pastors in congregationally-organized churches are unable to control church policy and a number of mechanisms contributing to pastoral power are delineated. Finally, the resistance of these pastors to formal organization is explored and related to the church-sect t…
Teaching the Sociology of Religion
Broken Frame and Emergent Meaning
Symbolic interaction stresses the personal definition of the situation, while frame analysis seeks to uncover the background assumptions within which interaction takes place. Although some see these as opposing approaches, the argument here is that they are complementary, particularly where social change undermines previous rules for interacting. The argument is illustrated by focusing on the emergence of student evaluation of teaching as an inst…
