  • Philosophers of Nothingness

    James W Heisig•BOOK•Philosophers of Nothingness•2017

The past twenty years have seen the publication of numerous translations and commentaries on the principal philosophers of the Kyoto School, but so far no general overview and evaluation of their thought has been available, either in Japanese or in Western languages. James Heisig, a longstanding participant in these efforts, has filled that gap with Philosophers of Nothingness. In this extensive study, the ideas of Nishida Kitaro, Tanabe Hajime, …

  • Nothingness and Desire

    James W Heisig, Paul L Swanson•BOOK•Nothingness and Desire•2013

The six lectures that make up this book were delivered in March 2011 at London University's School of Oriental and Asian Studies as the Jordan Lectures on Comparative Religion. They revolve around the intersection of two ideas, nothingness and desire, as they apply to a re-examination of the questions of self, God, morality, property, and the East–West philosophical divide. Rather than attempt to harmonize East and West philosophies into a single…

    James W Heisig•ARTICLE•Studies in Interreligious Dialogue•2004

The story of Sudhana’s pilgrimage to the truth, although one of the most important in all the Buddhist canon, is a dif3cult one to assimilate spiritually outside the precincts of Buddhist belief. Unlike the story of Prince Siddhartha’s journey to awakening, which has proved inspiring to people of all faiths, Sudhana’s journey to the truth does not seem to be structured by the sorts of mythical pattern that allow it entrance into spiritualities ot…

  • Nishida's medieval bent

    Open Access•James W Heisig•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Religious…•2004

One of the pillars of the philosophy of Nishida KitarŌ (1870-1945) was a firm belief in the unity of consciousness and reality, a belief that ran throughout his writings without ever having been subjected to serious criticism. Quite the contrary, it appears to have been sheltered from criticism by a number of supporting ideas that Nishida shared with thinkers, in particular mystical thinkers, of the Middle Ages. The present essay considers four o…

This book contains a comprehensive account of what Jung had to say about the God-image between 1902 and 1961.
