    Daniel Cahen, Lawrence H Keeley et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Cited by: 135•References: 5

Stone artefacts are usually privileged witnesses, and often the sole preserved witnesses, of prehistoric man and his activities. The study of artefacts is ordinarily restricted to typology, i.e., description, classification, and comparison of these artefacts clustered into assemblages with a view to defining industries and, hence, prehistoric cultures. This approach is somewhat limited, as it registers differences or resemblances between the asse…

    Milla Y Ohel, D K Bhattacharya et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Cited by: 12•References: 6

The Clactonian tradition of the British Lower Palaeolithic is currently accepted as an autonomous prehistoric culture, distinct from the Acheulean and pre-dating it. The recent excavations of a number of central sites have opened up a new opportunity for a comprehensive reinvestigation of Clactonian versus Acheulean artifacts along with other aspects related to the two complexes.

This paper is a review of the fossil evidence bearing upon the problem of the origin and evolution of Homo sapiens and his relationship to Neanderthal Man, with special attention to the finds from Central and Eastern Europe, less well-known to the international community than those of Western Europe and elsewhere. Emphasis is placed on new discoveries supplementing the existing network of finds and on the reinterpretation of earlier finds through…

  • The Fate of the "Classic" Neanderthals: A Consideration of Hominid Catastrophism [and Comments and Reply]

    C Loring Brace, George A Agogino et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1964•Cited by: 83

The Current View That the "Classic" Neanderthals Were an aberrant, specialized, or otherwise peculiar side branch which eventually became extinct without descendants has its origins in anti-evolutionary interpretations placed upon the available hominid fossils by the french palaeontologist marcellin boule in the early part of the current century. The theoretical bases of boule's thinking stem from the early nineteenth century position of George C…
