  • Optimal Human Development

    Open Access•Jochen Brandtstadter, Klaus A Schneewind•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

The present paper discusses decision problems relating to developmental goals. It is argued that developmental planning and intervention should be based on scientifically founded programmatic models of human development. Some caveats are added, primarily regarding the problem of relating programmatic models to authentic definitions of human interests. Finally, self-optimization is proposed as a key concept for a programmatic model of development.…

  • Interpreting ambiguous stimuli

Open Access•Alex Vo, Andreas Voss et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experimental Social…•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 35

Interpreting ambiguous situations is not a purely data-driven process but can be biased towards positive interpretations by top-down influences. The present study tries to identify the underlying processes of these top-down influences. There are two separable types of processes that can be influenced by motivational biases: A perceptual bias affects information uptake whereas a judgmental bias affects acceptance criteria for positive and negative…

  • Biases in self-evaluation

Open Access•Klaus Rothermund, Peter Michael Bak et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 33

This study investigated moderating effects of attribute controllability on self-evaluation biases. Students of psychology rated the degree to which they possessed attributes that were described as having either positive or negative implications for academic success. For attributes that were perceived as trait-like or stable, self-ratings were higher when the attributes were presented as positive predictors of achievement than when the same attrib…

  • The Life-Course Dynamics of Goal Pursuit and Goal Adjustment

    Open Access•Jochen Brandtstadter, Klaus Rothermund•ARTICLE•Developmental Review•2002•Cited by: 72•References: 17

  • Models for prediction analysis in longitudinal research

Alexander Von Eye, Jochen Brandtstadter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This paper discusses models for Prediction Analysis (PA) in longitudinal research. It describes PA as a non‐standard log‐linear model (von Eye et al., 1993). Models for predictions in longitudinal data are introduced including Equi‐Finality models and Equi‐Causality models of development. Models are described for two and more occasions of measurement. The relationship between formulating prediction hypotheses and model specification is discussed.…

  • Action, Culture and Development

    Open Access•Jochen Brandtstadter•ARTICLE•Culture & Psychology•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Based on Boesch's contributions to cultural psychology, prospects as well as problems of connecting the theoretical perspectives of action, culture and development are explored in this paper. Cultural systems maintain and regenerate themselves through the regulation and control of development over the life-span. Within the matrix of sociocultural constraints, developing subjects select and construe their own developmental ecologies and create the…

  • The Aging Self

  • Models for prediction analysis

Alexander Von Eye, Jochen Brandtstadter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1993•References: 2

This paper discusses models for prediction analysis. It describes prediction analysis as devised by Hildebrand, Laing, and Rosenthal (1977) and criticisms of the method. Paradoxical results are illustrated. The paradoxical characteristics are explained from differences between models underlying statistical testing and hypothesis formulation. The paper proposes nonstandard log‐linear modeling as an alternative to Hildebrand et al.’s (1977) approac…

  • Personal self-regulation of development

    Jochen Brandtstadter•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1989•Cited by: 18•References: 1

This study is part of a larger research project centering on personal self-regulation of development in adulthood. Cross-sectional, longitudinal, and correlational findings are presented for selected parameters of personal development (subjective developmental attainment, self-corrective tendency, p

  • Continuity, Change, and Context in Human Development

    Jochen Brandtstadter•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•1988

Up to now, developmental psychology has had only limited success in predicting long-term development over the life span. True, longitudinal research in developmental psychology has confirmed our preconceptions favoring stability and continuity in human development to some extent (e.g., Eichorn et al. 1981): A person of less than average intelligence will seldom become a luminary of science; a person suffering from anxiety neurosis will seldom bec…
