  • Ruling out risks in medical research

Open Access•Sten Anttila, Johannes Persson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2019•References: 2

In medical research, it is not unusual that risks are ruled out without any specification the exact risk that was ruled out. This makes it difficult to balance expected health benefits and risk of harm when choosing between alternative treatment options. International guidelines for reporting medical research results are sufficiently specific when it comes to establishing health benefits. However, there is a lack of standards for reporting on rul…

  • From Opinion-Based to Evidence-Based Social Work

Open Access•Knut Sundell, Haluk Soydan et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 1

This article presents an account of Sweden’s Institute for Evidence-Based Social Work Practice (IMS), located in Stockholm, Sweden. The article places IMS in the context of making Swedish social care services less opinion-based and more evidence-based. The institute is an example of how policy-driven processes promote the use of evidence-based practices in this European nation. The article includes presentations of history, organization, and prod…

  • The Voluntary Provision of Snowmobile Trails on Private Land in Sweden

    Open Access•Sten Anttila, Charlotta Stern•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2005•References: 19

A snowmobile trail canalizes snow-covered land to create a path of snowmobile travel. This form of communication infrastructure yields two kinds of benefits. First, it reduces negative externalities befalling landowners and other non-drivers. Second, it improves driving conditions for both local inhabitants and leisure tourists enjoying outdoor recreation. Our study suggests that problems befalling landowners decline as trails are established and…

  • Att förhålla sig till tidigare forskning

    Open Access•Sten Anttila, Sten T Anttila•ARTICLE•Sociologisk Forskning•1998

The problem of how to relate to previous research in the research process is severe when normal science has not been established, e.g. as in the case of sociology and as in certain fields of inter-disciplinary research. Yet, this problem has been more or less neglected in methodological textbooks. Under non-normal circumstances the reasoning is often very complex and it may be difficult to determine which literature is relevant to relate to and h…

  • Environmental adjustment and private economic strategies in reindeer pastoralism

    Sten Anttila, Sten T Anttila et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The aim of this article is to suggest a research approach to be used in studies of common‐pool resource problems and the deterioration of reindeer pasture. A frequent strategy in such studies is game theory based on rational choice assumptions. This approach has been criticised, for instance, for the neglect of local knowledge concerning cultural preconditions and for the political implications damaging Saami reindeer‐ecology. Our contention is t…
