  • Liberty, the Maria Luz Incident and the Liminal Legal Status of Chinese Indentured Labourers and Japanese Licensed Prostitutes

    Open Access•Bill Mihalopoulos•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2025

While covering the same ground as recent scholarship on the emancipatory potential of the Maria Luz incident, this article takes a radical departure, arguing that the background to the incident was British desire to disrupt the Macao trade in Chinese labour to Peru; that the legal focus of the ad hoc tribunals was not on any nascent human right to free the Chinese men and minors from being trafficked to Peru but on who owned and controlled their …

  • The never-ending Pacific War: Imamura Shōhei and the ruse of memory

    Bill Mihalopoulos•ARTICLE•Japan Forum•2020•References: 8

This article focuses on three documentaries made by the acclaimed director Imamura Shōhei (1926–2006) for Tokyo Channel 12 between 1971 and 1973. The three documentaries – In Search of the Unreturned Soldiers in Malaysia (1971), In Search of the Unreturned Soldiers in Thailand (1971); and Outlaw Matsu Returns (1973) – challenge contemporary accounts that valorise the Japanese state as the ultimate political agent of progress. Imamura presents his…

  • 世界か Women, Overseas Sex Work and Globalization in Meiji

    Open Access•Bill Mihalopoulos•ARTICLE•Japan focus•2012

Sex in Japan's Globalization, 1870-1930, from which the following discussion is adapted and developed, deals with poor rural women who migrated overseas to work as sex labourers. The core of the book is a historical study of the gendered and class impact of Japan's first encounter with globalisation that began in the 1860s. The women who worked in overseas brothels, I argue, must be first understood as peasants liberated from the land by Meiji la…

  • Mediating the Good Life: Prostitution and the Japanese Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1880s–1920s

    Open Access•Bill Mihalopoulos•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2009•Cited by: 2

This article examines how the Japanese Woman's Christian Temperance Union, in the name of promoting liberty and rights of women in their relations with men, constructed hierarchies to ascribe value to themselves through moral condemnation. The JWCTU used extramarital sex as a political issue to strengthen the position of the legal wife in the household as opposed to the concubine and prostitute. Their efforts to prohibit Japanese women from going…

  • Modernization as creative problem making: Political action, personal conduct and Japanese overseas prostitutes

    Bill Mihalopoulos•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This paper is concerned with how and why the karayuki-san – Japanese female migrants who worked as sexual labourers from 1880 until the start of the Pacific War – became an issue that had to be dealt by successive Japanese governments. The argument of the paper is that the creation of the karayuki-sanas a problem of government cannot be divorced from the concurrent emergence of changes in the ethics of personal conduct under the rubric of ‘modern…
