  • Can information about jobs improve the effectiveness of vocational training? Experimental evidence from India

Open Access•Bhaskar Chakravorty, Wiji Arulampalam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We use a randomized experiment to evaluate the impact of providing richer information about prospective jobs to vocational trainees on their employment outcomes. The setting of the study is the vocational training program DDU-GKY in India. We find that including in the training two information sessions about placement opportunities make trainees 18% more likely to stay in the jobs in which they are placed. We provide suggestive evidence that the …

  • Impact of the Covid-19 crisis on India’s rural youth

    Open Access•Bhaskar Chakravorty, Apurav Yash Bhatiya et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper presents evidence on the short and long-term impact of the COVID-19 crisis on India’s rural youth. We interviewed about 2,000 vocational trainees from Bihar and Jharkhand three times after the first national lockdown in 2020, between June 2020 and December 2021. We find that a third of respondents who were in salaried jobs pre-lockdown lost their jobs, and half of those who worked out of state returned home shortly after the lockdown. …

  • Gender Differences in Job Search

Open Access•Thomas Le Barbanchon, Roland Rathelot et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2020

We relate gender differences in willingness to commute to the gender wage gap. Using French administrative data on job search criteria, we first document that unemployed women have a lower reservation wage and a shorter maximum acceptable commute than their male counterparts. We identify indifference curves between wage and commute using the joint distributions of reservation job attributes and accepted job bundles. Indifference curves are steepe…

  • Les difficultés scolaires et professionnelles des jeunes issus de l'immigration

Open Access•Romain Aeberhardt, Roland Rathelot et al.•ARTICLE•Population•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 44

  • Local Ethnic Composition and Natives' and Immigrants' Geographic Mobility in France, 1982-1999

    Open Access•Roland Rathelot, Mirna Safi•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2014•Cited by: 36•References: 90

This article provides empirical results on patterns of native and immigrant geographic mobility in France. Using longitudinal data, we measure mobility from one French municipality (commune) to another over time and estimate the effect of the initial municipality's ethnic composition on the probability of moving out. These data allow us to use panel techniques to correct for biases related to selection based on geographic and individual unobserva…

  • Do Labor Market Policies have Displacement Effects? Evidence from a Clustered Randomized Experiment

Bruno Crépon, Esther Duflo et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2013

This article reports the results from a randomized experiment designed to evaluate the direct and indirect (displacement) impacts of job placement assistance on the labor market outcomes of young, educated job seekers in France. We use a two-step design. In the first step, the proportions of job seekers to be assigned to treatment (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%) were randomly drawn for each of the 235 labor markets (e.g., cities) participating in th…

  • Measuring Segregation When Units are Small

Roland Rathelot•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2012

This article considers the issue of measuring segregation in a population of units that contain few individuals (e.g., establishments, classrooms). When units are small, the usual segregation indices, which are based on sample proportions, are biased. We propose a parametric solution: the probability that an individual within a given unit belongs to the minority is assumed to be distributed as a mixture of Beta distributions. The model can be est…

  • The Importance of Local Corporate Taxes in Business Location Decisions

    Open Access•Roland Rathelot, Patrick Sillard•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2008•Cited by: 14•References: 28

Determinants of businesses locations are known to be multiple. Locations of partners and competitors are crucial, as well as the territory's local characteristics. To consider the importance of local taxes we build a Poisson model to explain the number of business creations observed in a given municipality. First results suggest that there are unobserved factors driving firm creation that are positively correlated with the level of local taxes. T…
