  • Local Management of Migrant Death in South Texas

Molly Miranker, Alessandra Giordano•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2025

We share the results of interviews and participant observations conducted in South Texas in spring of 2020 and summer of 2021 to understand how local authorities manage the issue of migrant deaths. Drawing on fifty-seven interviews and observations of local stakeholders from law enforcement and first responders to nonprofit organizations, United States Border Patrol (USBP) agents, and others, three experiences emerged. First, USBP both capacitate…

  • Toward a Humanitarian Geographic Information Science (HGISci)

Molly Miranker, Alessandra Giordano et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2025•References: 67

This article introduces the theoretical principles and methodological toolkit for implementing humanitarian geographic information science (HGISci), a transdisciplinary approach that leverages spatial analytical perspectives and tools to inform humanitarian forensic action. Drawing from the work of geographers, GIScientists, and forensic anthropologists, HGISci supports research and action that is attentive to power structures, the relationships …

  • Necro-Forensic Spectrum

Open Access•Lucia Elgerud, Molly Miranker et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Anthropological Practice•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Several forensic anthropologists have moved toward engaging with both social theory and advocacy for social justice in recent years. Necropolitical theory has been the object of some attention in this realm, primarily in the context of human rights violations. However, explorations of marrying forensic anthropological practices with necropolitics have not accounted for the theoretical origin of the latter as defined by Mbembe. Further, there is a…

  • Tracing Trajectories

    Open Access•Molly Miranker•ARTICLE•Journal on Migration and Human…•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Executive Summary This paper explores how qualitative information may be used to enhance understanding and inform recommendations for improved accounting of migrant deaths along the Texas-Mexico border. While border crossing related deaths affect jurisdictions throughout the US’s Southwestern border states and Northern Mexican states, Texas has unique challenges that merit specific examination. In short, the management and investigation of uniden…

  • Dehydration Rate and a Novel Model to Aid Search and Relief for Undocumented Border Crossers in the Sonoran Desert

Samuel N Chamber, Samuel N Chambers et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2022

There has been a proliferation of geographic literature exploring the fatal effects of immigration policy since the early 2000s. Studies have used geographic information systems (GIS) and predictive modeling to explore potential relationships between border protection infrastructure, environment, and migrant death. Although some studies have used GIS to determine the probable effects of heat stress, none have included the potential perspiration a…

  • Text mining and semantic triples

    Open Access•Molly Miranker, Alessandra Giordano•ARTICLE•Digital Geography and Society•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 18

The methods and tools of Geographic Information Sciences (GIScience)—spatial analysis, spatial statistics, and geographic information technologies—are increasingly being used in forensic humanitarian projects. In this article we explore ways to parse and analyze social and media releases from the United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) to gain an understanding of the death of migrants at the Texas-Mexico border. The methods we used include …
