Decision Rules for Hypertension Screening: Application in a Poor Community with Endemic Hypertension
Data from a hypertension screening project involving 4,272 black residents of a rural southern community were analyzed to determine the effects of a set of admission-decision rules on the case load of a proposed hypertension clinic. Four decision rules were investigated: conjunctive (diastolic high or systolic high); disjunctive (diastolic and/or systolic high); additive (sum of diastolic and systolic high); and systolic only. Most information re…
A General Consistency Check Procedure for Machine-Readable Data
Several levels of data 'cleaning' and editing are discussed, and a standard terminology for data-consistency checking and editing is developed. Consistency checking can occur at the level of data structure, syntax, or semantics. A consistency check either may be unconditional, depending only on the value of a single variable; or it may depend on the joint values of the members of a set of variables. The result of a consistency check may be expres…
A Review of Mathematical Methods in Sociometry
Current mathematical and computer methods for the analysis of group and organizational structures of communication and evaluation are reviewed. Sociometric data collection, the detection of cliques and subgroups, sociometric index construction, and computer methods in sociometry are discussed. Clique detection methods are classified as either linkage methods, in which sociometric data are treated as a linear graph, or as distance methods, in whic…
A Microeconomic Model of Sociometric Choice
The behavior of a person selecting a set of friends from a larger set of acquaintances can be analyzed as a consumer choice problem. The person can be regarded as a consumer allocating his income among a set of goods which he must purchase in quantities which will maximize his utility. An increase in utility can come either from an increase in expenditure or from a better allocation of resources. Results of an unlimited-choice sociometric questio…
