A Central Periphery: Catalan Settlers and the Economy of Spanish Guinea (1778-1968)
With this paper we present an analysis of a group of white settlers almost completely neglected by historiography, the Catalans that migrated to Spanish Guinea (present-day Guinea Ecuatorial). We highlight how in spite of being rarely involved directly in the administration of the territory, Catalans were determinant to its economic evolution. Through a constant and systematic lobbying in both Guinea and Madrid, Catalan individuals, companies and…
Experts’, Settlers and Africans: The Production of Local Agricultural and Veterinary Knowledge in Southern Rhodesia (1897–1914)
Historiography dealing with the development of colonial science in Africa and the production of ‘local knowledge’ has gradually become more complex and nuanced. Interactions as well as conflicts between local and imperial knowledge are highlighted, together with the partial incorporation of African knowledge into scientists’ ideas, and the contradictions within scientific institutions. The aim of this paper is to analyse how agricultural and vete…
Integrating social-ecological systems and global production networks: Local effects of trophy hunting in Namibian conservancies
In addition to wildlife conservation, Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) programmes aim to foster regional development. To achieve this, communal areas couple to tourism Global Production Networks (GPN). In this paper, we conceptualise Namibian communal Conservancies as Social-Ecological Systems (SES) and combine the SES and GPN approaches to benefit from the SESF's explanatory power for ecological and social relationships at a l…
Community Conservation and Land Use in Namibia: Visions, Expectations and Realities
Since independence in 1990, a growing number of institutions and social groups have advanced diverse and often conflicting visions and expectations regarding the use of land in Namibia’s Communal Areas. The importance attributed to agriculture, livestock, conservation or tourism is intensely debated. This article will analyse these views and the policies being implemented, with a special focus on a relatively new actor: nature conservation, under…
Conservation on contested lands: The case of Namibia's communal conservancies
Community Conservation initiatives have become widespread in several Southern African countries and have also been increasingly involved in disputes over land claims, control of resources and territorial authority. The aim of this paper is to analyse how Communal Conservancies in Namibia are being used by rural communities as tools for gaining or securing access to and control of communal land in a moment when it is perceived as increasingly scar…
Beyond Black and White: Ethnicity and Land Reform in Namibia
A Question of Game or Cattle? The Fight against Trypanosomiasis in Southern Rhodesia (1898-1914)
After the rinderpest outbreak of 1896, wide areas of Southern Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe) were denuded of cattle. The disease also affected some species of wild animals, killing large numbers of them. As the game disappeared and areas of tsetse infestation reduced, so cattle could be introduced into districts where they were previously absent for fear of fly-transmitted trypanosomiasis. Yet when rinderpest was eradicated and game numbers reco…
