  • Police civilianisation in Canada: A mixed methods investigation

John Kiedrowski, Rick Ruddell et al.•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•2017•Cited by: 3

Although the ratio of police officers to population in Canada has been relatively stable since the 1980s there has been a substantial increase in the number of civilians working for police services. To better understand the economic and other consequences of civilianisation, we employed two strategies: an exploratory qualitative examination of the challenges of civilianisation involving a survey and follow-up interviews; and a quantitative analys…

Oxford/Portland, Oregon : Hart ( 2007 ) 278pp . £30.00hb ISBN 1841135925 McAlinden analyses the politically popular retributive and incapacitating strategies favoured in contemporary English-speaking societies as a response to widespread moral panic over sexual offending against children. • Modèles de dangerosité: Les Contrevenants Sexuels Et La Loi

    Open Access•Michael Petrunik•ARTICLE•Criminologie•2005

The history of dangerous offender legislation reveals a selective focus on few sexual and violent offenders many of whom are not demonstrably more dangerous than most of the offenders from the larger pool of sexual and violent offenders from which they are drawn. To the extent such legislation draws attention from routine frequently occuring forms of violence in favour of the violence of a few predatory offenders it is clearly problematic. Noneth…

  • Fragile Facades: Stuttering and the Strategic Manipulation of Awareness

    Michael Petrunik, Clifford D Shearing et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1983•Cited by: 12•References: 20

This is a study of how stutterers cope with their disability. We examine strategies used to manage interactional order and identity by concealing, revealing, or disavowing stuttering. This offers insights into the way people manage disabilities: the articulation of premeditated and spontaneous tactics, and how management strategies shape, and are shaped by, the experience of disability

  • Telephone Troubles: Interactional Breakdown and its Management by Stutterers and Their Listeners

    Open Access•Michael Petrunik•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 4

While both face-to-face and telephone interaction involve problems of management for stutterers and their listeners, the absence of visual cues in telephone talk poses special problems which can lead to interactional breakdown. These problems are accentuated by factors such as an individual's pattern of stuttering and adaptations to stuttering, the awareness context in which interaction takes place, and the nature of the relationship between the …
