  • Neighbourhood differences in diet: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (Aric) Study

    Ana V Diez–roux, A V Diez-Roux et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Cited by: 42•References: 32

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether neighbourhood characteristics are related to dietary patterns independently of individual level variables. DESIGN: A cross sectional analysis of the relation between neighbourhood median household income and food and nutrient intakes, before and after adjustment for individual level variables. SETTING: Four United States communities (Washington Co, MD; Suburban Minneapolis, MN; Forsyth Co, NC, and Jackson, …

  • Neighborhood Environments and Coronary Heart Disease: A Multilevel Analysis

    Ana V Diez–roux, A V Diez-Roux et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•1997

The authors investigated whether neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics are associated with coronary heart disease prevalence and risk factors, whether these associations persist after adjustment for individual-level social class indicators, and whether the effects of individual-level indicators vary across neighborhoods. The study sample consisted of 12,601 persons in four US communities (Washington County, Maryland; Forsyth County, North Ca…

  • Antihypertensive treatment and US trends in stroke mortality, 1962 to 1980

Michele Casper, S Wing et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 4•References: 39

OBJECTIVES. This study examines the association between increases in antihypertensive pharmacotherapy and declines in stroke mortality among 96 US groups stratified by race, sex, age, metropolitan status, and region from 1962 to 1980. METHODS. Data on the prevalence of controlled hypertension and socioeconomic profiles were obtained from three successive national health surveys. Stroke mortality rates were calculated using data from the National …

  • Passive smoking and 20-year cardiovascular disease mortality among nonsmoking wives, Evans County, Georgia

    Charles G Humble, C Humble et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 3•References: 13

The association of passive smoking and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality was assessed in a cohort of 513 rural, married Black and White women who were disease-free and self-described as never-smokers at baseline in 1960. Over a 20-year period, 76 of 147 total deaths were attributed to CVD. Relative risk estimates adjusted for age, cholesterol, blood pressure, and body mass from proportional hazards models were 1.59 for CVD (95% CI = 0.99, 2.…

    Frank Cordle, H A Tyroler•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1974

One of the major problems in attempting to use information collected in the medical care system for epidemiologic research, e.g., information from hospital medical records, is the problem of identifying the population at risk for admission to hospital. In this study, the population at risk has been identified as all residents of Charleston County, South Carolina in 1963. This population numbered some 215,000 individuals with 16,903 residents of t…
