Henry VIII and the Court: Art, Politics and Performance, ed. Thomas Betteridge and Suzannah Lipscomb
William Cecil, Ireland, and the Tudor State, by Christopher Maginn
The extraordinary flowering of sixteenth-century Irish history since about 1975 has transformed our understanding of events and generated illuminating controversy. It has largely, and rightly, been written from an Irish angle, whether that of the ‘New English’ soldiers and settlers or the government in Dublin, including the ‘Chief Governors’, the Crown’s representatives; or from that of the two established communities, the ‘Old English’, or the G…

The Anglo-Florentine Renaissance: Art for the Early Tudors, ed. Cinzia Maria Sicca and Louis A. Waldman
The ambivalent title heralds a rather baffling collection of essays, edited by Cinzia Maria Sicca and Louis A. Waldman. The book is the result of a conference held in Florence in 2007. It begins with an excellent survey of Anglo-Florentine relations generally in the early sixteenth century by Steven Gunn, written with his customary lucidity and capacity to spot the unexpected in the detail. It is also refreshingly cool in approach, undercutting t…
Shakespeare and the Just War Tradition, by Paola Pugliatti
There has been a plethora of writing about Shakespeare and the morality of war over the last thirty years, much of it directly tied to present-day concerns. Paola Pugliatti, Professor of English at the University of Florence, follows the pattern. She provides a useful summary of just-war theory between Augustine and Shakespeare’s contemporary Alberico Gentili, and of the rival ‘pacifist’ tradition (More, Erasmus and Vives). She goes on to the imm…
Tudor: What's in a Name
The ‘Tudor’ name for the royal family was hardly known in the sixteenth century. The almost obsessive use of the term by historians is therefore profoundly misleading about how English people of the time thought of themselves and of their world, the more so given the overtones of glamour associated with it. The royal surname was never used in official publications, and hardly in ‘histories’ of various sorts before 1584. Monarchs were not anxious …

The Dialogue of the Government of Wales (1594): Updated Text and Commentary, ed. John Gwynfor Jones
This is a new edition of an Elizabethan text, previously printed in 1906. The author (curiously not named on the title-page) is George Owen of Henllys—better known for his The Description of Pembrokeshire—a Pembrokeshire gentleman legally trained in London, as his father had been before him. Professor Gwynfor Jones, a leading historian of sixteenth-century Wales, has modernised spelling and grammar to produce an accessible text. He provides an ex…
Information, disinformation and political knowledge under Henry VII and early Henry VIII: Information and disinformation under Henry VII and early Henry VIII
Henry VII is generally seen as the initiator of a vigorous campaign of ‘Tudor propaganda’ about the events which led to his accession. This article argues that his policy was rather one of selective obfuscation, even deliberate concealment. As late as 1512 the conscientious compiler of the London ‘Great Chronicle’ could provide only a confused account of Richard III's reign, and very little on Henry's own family background or on his time in exile…
The Life and Career of William Paulet (c.1475-1572), Lord Treasurer and First Marquis of Winchester
Paulet is a frustrating subject. There is not the evidential base for a meaningful biography. We have appointments to commissions, mention of Paulet doing this and that, but nothing with which to get below the surface. Although he lived to a great age (in harness), we do not know his date of birth; Professor Loades makes a good case for c.1475, thus making him 97 or so in 1572. Even the most conservative estimate would make him 86. A lawyer from …
Arthur Tudor, Prince of Wales: Life, Death and Commemoration
Anybody hoping for much information about Prince Arthur, heir to Henry VII until his death, aged fifteen, in 1502, will be disappointed. This is not the fault of the contributors, but is due to the sheer paucity of the surviving information. Even Steven Gunn's gift for squeezing significant detail from unpromising documentation only results in ten pages on Arthur's ‘Preparation for Kingship’. He certainly received an intensive education. His tuto…
Calais: An English Town in France, 1347-1558 * The Calais Garrison: War and Military Service in England, 1436-1558
It is a surprise to have two books on Calais appearing simultaneously from a single publisher. Both are good, though very different in scope. Susan Rose's Calais is a useful account of the town from Edward III's conquest until its eventual reconquest by the French. It is a well-written, fluent narrative, interspersed with analytic chapters on social life in the town, making good use of the Cely, Lisle, and Johnson letters. There is also a brief a…
Representation, Repute, Reality
THE issue of monarchical power has stood at the centre of much of the political historiography on early modern England over the last two decades. Debate has tended to be polarised between those whom one might term more traditionally-minded political historians, who focus on the material sinews of power, such as legislation, taxation, and patronage, and those cultural historians who adopt a textual approach to the analysis of political power and w…
Henry VII
‘It is an exciting time to be studying Henry VII’ proclaims Sean Cunningham. Yet little of the excitement comes through in this book. The picture of Henry is the now established one: of a king who, by ‘effort and vigilance with a clear political programme’ not only survived as king but ‘established his dynasty’. More contentiously, if again fairly traditionally, by so doing Henry is alleged to have achieved a transformation in the relations of Cr…

The Wars of the Roses: The Soldiers' Experience
The Wars of the Roses: The Soldiers' Experience, by Anthony Goodman (Stroud: Tempus, 2005; pp. 288. £25). This, as the author acknowledges, is his second entry into the fray; Anthony Goodman published The Wars of the Roses: Military Activity and English Society, 1452–1497 in 1981. One strand of that book was an attempt to get at the realities of the wars, to see how they were actually experienced ‘on the ground’. That becomes ostensibly the theme…
Tudor England and its Neighbours
Tudor England and its Neighbours, ed. Susan Doran and Glenn Richardson (Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005; pp. 277. Pb. £20.99). This is a good varied collection, essentially a collection of discrete essays rather than a consensual attempt to ‘re-interpret’ its subject. The subject-matter is English foreign policy. Each contributor goes his or her own way. John Currin argues that Henry VII's policy was much more anti-French than is usually th…

A Woman in the Public Sphere; Dorothy Wadham and the Foundation of Wadham College, Oxford
Women were frequently involved in business as widows. Dorothy Wadham as founder of an Oxford college left documentation which illustrates her strategies in this situation. Aged 74, she was entrusted by her dying husband Nicholas with an ill‐formulated design for a foundation. A rival claimed Nicholas's commission for himself. Others saw the foundation as an opportunity for personal profit and patronage. Matters were complicated by the Wadhams' Ca…

International Politics and the Establishment of Presbyterianism in the Channel Islands: The Coutances Connection
In 1564 Artus de Cossé-Brissac, bishop of Coutances in Normandy, was a member of a French diplomatic mission to Queen Elizabeth. He took the opportunity to assert a claim to exercise episcopal jurisdiction in the Channel Islands. The claim was less preposterous than it might appear, since Coutances's jurisdiction in the islands had been acknowledged throughout Henry viii 's reign, and again in that of Mary. Queen and Privy Council took the 1564 c…
The Cromwellian Decade: Authority and Consent
The 1530s always remained classic Elton territory, in spite of later and fruitful excursions into the Cecilian world and beyond. How distinctive were the thirties? Are we still justified in talking about a ‘Revolution’? In a historical climate which puts the accent on continuities, such talk has become unfashionable. Productive reform was characteristic of the Wolsey ministry, of the reigns of Henry VII and of Edward IV, and perhaps had its origi…

Les révoltes populaires en Angleterre (1500-1700)

Dans quelle mesure ces révoltes ont-elles été réellement une manifestation de la conscience de classe et du ressentiment des artisans et des paysans contre le système social en vigueur ? Dans q…
