Franco Venturi's ‘crisis’ of the Old Regime
This paper discusses Franco Venturi's concept of a general European ‘crisis’ in the period 1768 – 89, which is covered in volumes III, IV and V of Settecento riformatore. With this concept Venturi allied himself with R. R. Palmer, A. Sorel, J. Juarès and others who sought to explore the larger context of the Enlightenment and French Revolution. Critics of the English translation of Venturi's volumes III and IV (1989 – 91) have failed to perceive …

A Provincial Elite in Early Modern Tuscany: Family and Power in the Creation of the State
This study of the formation of the early modern state in Florence shows how local families and central rulers redefined concepts of power and domination which conditioned political evolution along social and gender lines. The Florentine state was one of the first to create new state institutions, challenge municipal powers, and develop a new centralized political system. By incorporating the families of shopkeepers, wool producers, landholders, n…

Single people in the nineteenth-century city: A comparative perspective on occupations and living situations

Emergence of a Bureaucracy: The Florentine Patricians, 1530-1790
Burr Litchfield traces the development of the patrician elite of Florence from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries, the growth of a bureaucratic state in Tuscany during this period, and the changing relationship of the patricians to the state apparatus. His discussion of this largely neglected period of Italian history shows that the elite of the Florentine Renaissance Republic continued as the main component of the urban office-holdin…

Demographic Characteristics of Florentine Patrician Families, Sixteenth to Nineteenth Centuries
One seemingly certain characteristic of the social structure of Europe between the sixteenth and late eighteenth centuries was the persistence in power, wealth, and eminence of limited numbers of individuals or families. These made up the aristocracies, the nobilities of feudal origin, the ennobled officeholders of the new monarchies, and the patrician oligarchs of the towns. Political structures provided these families with privileged status and…
