  • School and Peers

    Steven J Dick, Craig J Forsyth et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 36

This paper uses data on 10th graders from 2014 Caring Communities Youth Survey to examine the effect of protective factors on delinquency/age of onset (never, 13 or younger, 14 or older) of two antisocial behaviors (carrying a handgun to school and attacking someone with the intent of seriously hurting them). Two domains of protective factors are used: school and peers. The most significant protective factor for both antisocial behaviors was reli…

  • Addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences

    Open Access•Paula D Zeanah, Karen Burstein et al.•ARTICLE•Societies•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Recognition that economic, environmental, and social adversity affects health is not new; adversity may result from social determinants such as poverty, community violence, or poor nutrition; from within the family/caregiving environment; or interactions between these complex environs. However, compelling new research demonstrating the profound impact of cumulative early adversity and toxic stress on development and adult health is leading to the…

  • Determining Normal Deviance

Jing Chen, Chen Jing et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 34

This research examines change in lifetime drug use frequency among three drugs, marijuana, alcohol, and inhalants, and antisocial behaviors using a cohort longitudinal model. Inhalants are the only drugs which use decline with grade level. Focus of the article is whether the use of these three drugs is a normal part of adolescent development. Using three determinants: associations between drug use and grade and scores on an antisocial behavior sc…

  • The Poly-Drug User

    Raymond W Biggar, Craig J Forsyth et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2017

Based on data from the 2014 Communities that Care Youth Survey, the authors examine the associations between drug use frequencies among 11 drugs. This research represents a step in determining what leads to the use of dangerous drugs like heroin, other opioids, and other not so dangerous substances. Findings indicate the highest association is between marijuana and alcohol use. Most drugs show at least a low to medium association with all other d…

  • A Theoretical Model for Preparing Incarcerated Youth for Careers in an Increasingly Technological World

Karen Burstein, Craig J Forsyth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2016

Most youth in juvenile delinquent systems end up incarcerated due in part to poor decision-making skills. This study describes a theoretical framework undergirding the relationships across delinquency, learning climate, decision-making, and computational logic. This framework will inform a team of educators, criminologists, and psychologists, and their peers in computer science and mathematics, instructional software design, and content experts a…

  • Young Children’s Engagement With E-Books at School

    Open Access•Kathleen Roskos, Kathleen A Roskos et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2014

Differences between digital devices on children’s engagement with e-books are examined. The sample included 24 typical 4-year olds enrolled in Head Start. Over a 1-month period, video captures of children’s multi-sensory behaviors during shared reading at a tabletop touchscreen computer and teacher-facilitated book browsing with iPads and iPods were obtained. Data were coded on each child at 1-min intervals, examining the simultaneity of behavior…

  • Improving Homework Completion and Academic Performance

    Tanis H Bryan, Tanis Bryan et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Homework problems among students with learning disabilities can be attributed to two primary causes: (a) students' characteristics (e.g., poor motivation, problems in listening comprehension, lack of organizational skills), and (b) teachers' deficits in making assignments (e.g., assigning work that is too difficult or time-consuming, failing to ensure that students record assignments properly or have necessary materials). The past decade has seen…
