    Open Access•Anne Raffin•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2024

Scholars studying international retirement migration (IRM) refer to lifestyle migration to explain the motives and aspirations of older individuals who choose to relocate out of their home country. Here I investigate French retirees’ reasons for migrating to Southeast Asia, and their sense of purpose in doing so. Interviews with 17 retirees living in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and Vientiane, Laos, whose narratives evoked some degree of historical r…

Based on interviews with thirty-eight French retirees living in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, this article queries their reasons for migrating and investigates how they make sense of their life abroad. I consider Vietnam’s historical connection with the French empire as a possible component of lifestyle migration and meaning. This small-scale study indicates that colonial memories and historical ties between France and Vietnam do influe…

  • Civility and Humiliation under the French Flag: The Tensions of Colonial Liberalism in Pondicherry, 1871-86

    Open Access•Anne Raffin•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2014•References: 1

This article explores the extension of political "liberty" and franchise - as well as the eventual extension of citizenship rights - to Indians during the decades of France's Third Republic (1870s-80s) in French colonial India. Not only does this example stand in stark contrast to the civil position of Indians in British India at the time, but it was also something of a unique situation in the French colonial world. How did the French attempt to …

Studies on the military in Vietnam today see a concurrence between the changing role of the army-its growing economic role as well as its role as a tool to control the Vietnamese population-and the changing economy and international environment. How do we make sense of this evolution and its impact on civil-military relations in terms of power relations and authority? This study seeks to provide an analytical framework that shows how the military…

    Open Access•Anne Raffin•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2008•Cited by: 1

Some scholars have explained colonial policies as the outgrowth of the need to provide profits and prestige for the motherland. Others have linked policymaking to the use of colonial space as experimental laboratories of modernity; while others assert that the overseas was a terrain for finding solutions to some of the political, social and aesthetic problems which were affecting France at the time. In contrast, this paper traces how colonial pol…

  • Postcolonial Vietnam: Hybrid Modernity

    Anne Raffin•ARTICLE•Postcolonial Studies•2008•Cited by: 5

Why is postcolonial theory an underused approach when it comes to the study of postcolonial nations in Southeast Asia? What is postcolonialism trying to unpack, and how might this be relevant for comprehending Vietnam. This essay attempts to reflect on what the postcolonial consists of in the Vietnam case, given the country's historical passage through colonial, Cold War, and socialism eras. One of the consequences has been the birth of different…

  • Easternization Meets Westernization: Patriotic Youth Organizations in French Indochina during World War II

    Anne Raffin•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2002

Although colonizers generally repressed emergent national movements as potential vehicles of national liberation, the French encouraged patriotic mobilizations in Indochina in the early 1940s as a way to counteract Thai irredentists, Vietnamese revolutionaries, and Japanese occupiers and their claims of “Asia for Asians.”1 Here, colonial authorities sought to build allegiance to the empire by “patriotizing” youth attitudes through sports activiti…
