A complex-systems landscape: Recognizing what is important in world history
This article introduces a complex-systems metaphor/model for a world history greater than the sum of its parts. Due to the difficulty of thinking about any event within such a complicated context, we present a visualization to guide researchers’ recognition of the relationships that shape the historical process they study. To support thought, we repurpose a pair of linked visualizations that model gene expression in the morphogenesis of tissues a…

Gestores de la real justicia: Procuradores y agentes de las catedrales hispanas nuevas en la corte de Madrid
A short review will not do justice to Óscar Mazín’s remarkable book on how the Habsburg monarchy worked. Although the title invites a reading from specialists, Gestores de la real justicia should become an essential work for those who deal with the global Hispanic Monarchy during the period 1550 – 1650 and for world historians interested in the first global age, 1400 – 1800. How is it possible that a book focusing on four legal representatives (p…

Religious Authority in the Spanish Renaissance
Lu Ann Homza hunts big game in this book, and she bags enough trophies to make her work fundamental reading for all those who deal with the sixteenth-century Hispanic monarchy in both its European and overseas domains. Heavily influenced by Spain’s nineteenth- and twentieth-century conflicts over how the country should be constituted, many prominent Spanish and foreign scholars have adopted metanarratives presenting the last half millennium of Sp…

Gender and Disorder in Early Modern Seville
In this exploration of crisis in Counter-Reformation Spain, Mary Elizabeth Perry reveals the significance of gender for social order by portraying the lives of women who lived on the margins of respectability--prostitutes, healers, visionaries, and other deviants who provoked the concern of a growing central government linked closely to the church. Focusing on Seville, the commercial capital of Habsburg Spain, Perry uses rich archival sources to …
