  • Speculative fiction between criticism and catastrophism in the works of Octavia E. Butler and Ursula K. Le Guin

    Open Access•Natàlia Cantó-Milà, Aurea Mota•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2025

This article analyses three speculative fiction novels from the last decades of the 20th century: The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, along with Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1998) by Octavia E. Butler, from a sociological perspective. Through a theoretical analysis, we argue that these novels offer key ways to word a world and provide insight into broader cultural transformations, particularly shifts in the semantics…

  • Carbon societies’ past, present and future

Open Access•Tracey Skillington, Frank Adloff et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2025•References: 20

Ongoing societal commitments to carbon energy systems means that escalating climate catastrophe becomes the unavoidable outcome of a system of reasoning and institutional practice that historically has enabled the consolidation and global advance of a fossil fuel hegemony. To understand the ‘rational’ component of these developments, it is necessary to examine how the reasoning and practices associated with this hegemony gradually came to be embe…

  • Cosmopolitismo en América Latina, un recorrido histórico conceptual

    Open Access•Aurea Mota•ARTICLE•Revista Kawsaypacha: Sociedad y…•2024

  • Displacement, women intellectuals and entangled knowledge in the making of global modernity

    Open Access•Aurea Mota•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2023•References: 21

This article offers a perspective on how the proposed conceptualisation of the idea of displacement can be used to analyse processes of knowledge formation and transformation brought about by the movement of intellectuals in modernity. It develops a theoretical framework that considers the acts of cultural mediation and spatial displacement as key aspects for understanding the structures of knowledge and cultural interpretation produced in the fo…

  • Collective Action and Political Transformations

Aurea Mota, Peter Wagner•BOOK•Collective Action and Political…•2019

Takes lessons from the Global South to explore the possibilities for positive political action worldwide Collective action in our current global situation is often associated with growing intolerance, xenophobia and exclusion, or it is regarded as incapable of making a real and positive difference in the lives of individuals. This book acknowledges the severe problems with effective and significant collective action, but it arrives at a more opti…

  • Governing the Anthropocene

    Open Access•Gerard Delanty, Aurea Mota•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2017•Cited by: 41•References: 36

The growing body of literature on the idea of the Anthropocene has opened up serious questions that go to the heart of the social and human sciences. There has been as yet no satisfactory theoretical framework for the analysis of the Anthropocene debate in the social and human sciences. The notion of the Anthropocene is not only a condition in which humans have become geologic agents, thus signalling a temporal shift in Earth history: it can be s…

  • Eisenstadt, Brazil and the multiple modernities framework

    Open Access•Aurea Mota, Gerard Delanty•ARTICLE•Journal of Classical Sociology•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 23

The notion of multiple modernities as developed by Eisenstadt has become increasingly influential in debates about modernity and the historical formation of societies in comparative perspective. On closer inspection, the theoretical framework is less than straightforward when it comes to specific applications. This article considers Brazil from the perspective of a revised theory of multiple modernities. There has been virtually no application to…
