What Predicts Law Enforcement Reporting Among Male Sextortion Victims
Sextortion is the threat to disseminate private sexual images or information unless the victim complies with certain demands. While sextortion is a growing cybercrime, limited research explores victim reporting behaviors, particularly among males. Using survey data from 222 male sextortion victims, this study examines factors predicting law enforcement reporting, focusing on crime characteristics, emotional distress, and disclosure to trusted ind…
Public Stigma toward Adult Survivors of Adverse Childhood Experiences
Straight Outta 4chan: Exploring the Album Art of the White Supremacist “Moon Man” Music Project
While there has been research on the cultural products of white power groups, this project qualitatively examines one piece of the contemporary far right ecosystem—white power music album covers. More specifically, we examine 99 album covers featuring “Moon Man,” an imaginary character developed by anonymous music artists to better understand the symbols and ideas of this movement. The study finds that Moon Man was present on 84.8% of record cove…
Enhancing human trafficking victim services: A technology-driven, participatory action research approach
Human trafficking survivors experience significant service delivery barriers, exacerbated by inefficiencies of current coordinated community response models. Despite research on survivors’ needs and consequences of human trafficking, there remains a gap in examining the most efficient service deployment method for survivors. This study examines low user engagement with a human trafficking victim services platform, BRIGHT, designed to address data…
The future of our nation’s in her hands”: The social construction of gender in far-right music
Scholars, national security officials, and top law enforcement officers continue to argue that far-right extremism represents one of the most pressing forms of terrorism in the United States. Despite this, the current scholarship on far-right extremism is lagging, particularly in regard to the non-violent activities of these groups like music. Of the research that does exist, few examine these activities through a critical gendered lens despite t…
Understanding the Challenges in the Anti-Human Trafficking Movement in Florida
Florida ranks third in the United States for prevalence rates of human trafficking, but there are still clear gaps in the way we address human trafficking in terms of prevention, intervention, and treatment. To better understand the gaps in services for human trafficking survivors from the perspective of the providers who serve them, we conducted in-depth interviews with anti-trafficking stakeholders in Florida. This comprehensive gap analysis he…
Strains and Self-Harm: A Look at LGBQ, Transgender, and Non-binary College Students
Queer criminology is quickly growing but is often not integrated within orthodox theoretical frameworks. Moreover, many studies analyze the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals as a monolithic experience instead of investigating the nuances between sexuality and gender identity. This study bridges these gaps by using a national sample of college students and applying an intersectional, queer criminological lens to a general strain theory framework t…
We Are All Sentenced: The Lived Experience of Mothers With an Adult Incarcerated Daughter
The vast majority of research on the impact of familial incarceration focuses on its effect on children, even though one in eight adults in the United States has had a child in prison. While some studies have examined the lived experiences of mothers with an incarcerated adult son, no research has explored the effect of an adult daughter’s incarceration on their mother. Using in-depth interviews with four mothers who have adult daughters in priso…
Examining and Expanding Latinx General Strain Theory
Since the initial articulation of general strain theory (GST), Agnew has suggested strains may function differently—in type, response, and impact—for different groups. We build upon Pérez and colleagues’ foundational arguments for a Latinx GST by investigating the role of the ethnically specific strains they propose in addition to other strains argued to disproportionately impact people of Color. Furthermore, we examine the protective role of pos…
Public perceptions as a potential barrier for prison reform in Panama: An analysis of user comments on YouTube
While the Constitution of Panama is remarkably progressive in regard to the treatment of incarcerated persons, the actual conditions faced by these individuals are frequently described as inhumane. We collected data from comments on YouTube videos displaying media on Panamanian prisons to investigate public opinion about their condition. We conducted a content analysis of comments, and use regression models to analyse their attitude, engagement (…
Soldiers of the Faith: A Comparative Analysis of White Power Songs and Islamic State Nasheeds
he nonviolent activities of extremists have the capacity to shed important light on how such groups think and frame the world around them. This paper provides a comparative insight into the framing activities of Islamic State and white power (WP) groups through an analysis of the song lyrics that have emerged from these scenes. In doing so, we seek to understand the role that culture, particularly music, plays in constructing the worldview of bot…
Eviction and Crime: A Neighborhood Analysis in Philadelphia
In this study, we use generalized estimating equation (GEE) models to analyze how rates of eviction correspond to homicide, robbery, and burglary rates across all residential neighborhoods in Philadelphia from 2006 through 2016. We assess the moderating role of neighborhood poverty accounting for residential mobility, economic disadvantage, and community composition. We find that eviction is associated with all three types of crime in fully contr…
Returning Citizens and Point of Entry: Is There a Match
The period after incarceration and the influence of neighborhood effects are gaining interest among scholars as a small body of evidence is illustrating the difficulties returning citizens have obtaining basic services and needs, employment, stable housing, and other social and behavioral health supports in the areas where they are being released. Transitional planning efforts to ensure that returning citizens are prepared to engage in society an…
Health conditions and victimization among incarcerated individuals in U.S. jails
Vicarious Family Health Strain and Juvenile Delinquency
Research finds that vicarious strain significantly predicts juvenile delinquency. However, no studies have examined the influence of vicarious health strain on youth behavior despite the fact that when individuals directly experience poor health, there is a greater likelihood of crime and delinquency. Using a sample of youth from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) data, we assess the associations between vicarious f…
Entrepreneurship Education in the Transformation of Incarcerated Individuals: A Review of the Literature and Future Research Directions
This article draws upon the theories of entrepreneurial cognition, planned behavior, and criminal desistance to understand the role of entrepreneurship education in the behavioral and cognitive transformation of incarcerated individuals. Specifically, this article considers how participation in an entrepreneurship education program should influence entrepreneurial opportunity recognition, cognitive transformation, and institutional misconduct. It…
A Gendered Look at Latinx General Strain Theory
This study investigates gendered differences within Latinx experiences using a GST framework. We address four hypotheses: (1) Latinos and Latinas will vary in their degrees of risk for and resilience against criminal behavior; (2) Latinos and Latinas will experience strains to various degrees; (3) Latinos are more likely to respond to strain with violent and serious crime than Latinas due to the types of strains they face and their varying degree…
A Skinhead at Heart with a Hate-Filled Mind: Understanding the Themes Present in the White Power Music Scene
White extremism in the U.S. has not received much attention in the literature, despite scholars arguing that it represents the most sustained form of terrorism in the U.S. While much of the research on extremist movements has focused on the groups’ violent acts, there has been significantly less attention on the nonviolent activities, such as music. Following a social movement theoretical framework, we set out to understand the role that music pl…
Disentangling the health-crime relationship among adults: The role of healthcare access and health behaviors
Mental and physical health in prison: How co-occurring conditions influence inmate misconduct
BACKGROUND: Research has shown that inmate misconduct is related to a range of demographic factors and experiences with the criminal justice system. Poor mental and physical health has also been associated with inmate misconduct, although no research has examined the relationship between co-occurring conditions and misconduct in prison populations. METHODS: We rely on data from the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities (N = 14,4…
Unpacking the Racial Disparity in Crime from a Racialized General Strain Theory Perspective
Criminologists have long theorized the relationship between race and crime using traditional criminological theories, suggesting that Blacks simply experience more factors conducive to crime than Whites. Race scholars have criticized this “add and stir” approach and, instead, argue for race-based explanations. Racialized General Strain Theory (RGST) is the first traditional approach to address this call to action. To date, however, little researc…
Reexamining the link between parental knowledge and delinquency: Unpacking the Influence of Adolescents' and Their Parents' Perceptions
Parents’ and their children’s perceptions of how much parents know about the child’s activities outside parental presence (parental knowledge) are important for understanding delinquency. Yet, conceptual and methodological deficiencies in prior research may limit this understanding. Reexamining how these perceptions affect delinquency, we find that contrary to conventional wisdom: (1) adolescent and parent perceptions of parental knowledge impact…
