Field reliability of the Psychopathy Checklist–Revised among life-sentenced prisoners in Sweden: A follow-up study
OBJECTIVE: The Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) is widely used in forensic and clinical contexts, yet its reliability in high-stakes legal settings remains uncertain. In Sweden, it is routinely applied in court-ordered assessments for life-sentenced prisoners seeking commutation, making score consistency crucial. Sturup et al. (2014) found lower interrater reliability in this context compared with controlled research studies. This study exam…
Associations Between MMPI-3 Scales and Dimensional Personality Disorder Models in a Community Mental Health Sample
As the field adopts dimensional models of personality disorders (DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders [AMPD]; ICD-11 Personality Disorder), it is imperative that clinical assessment tools are available to assess them. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) is one such measure, as it is routinely used in clinical practice and assesses a variety of psychological symptoms. The current study aimed to build upon previou…
Do early environmental factors influence the relationship between psychopathy and crime: Longitudinal findings from the transitions in Amsterdam study
Validity of the Expanded Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy (E-LSRP) in a Brazilian Sample: Factor Structure, Construct Validity, and Associations with the Brazilian Jeitinho
We aimed to adapt the Expanded Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy (E-LSRP) to the Brazilian context, evaluate its internal structure and construct validity. We also aimed to expand the psychopathy nomological network by providing information about E-LSRP factors' associations with a Brazilian cultural phenomenon known as Brazilian Jeitinho. Our sample comprised 1,445 Brazilian adults, with ages varying from 18 to 81 years (M = 31.13; SD = 13.22). T…
Assessing psychopathic traits with the MMPI-3: Findings from correctional, university, and community samples
OBJECTIVE: The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) instruments have a long history with respect to the assessment of psychopathic personality traits. The most recent version, the MMPI-3, should be in a good position to continue this tradition, and the aim of the current research was to evaluate its scales for this purpose. We examined, on the basis of previous research, how well conceptually relevant MMPI-3 scales mapped onto domin…
Childhood trauma and psychopathy: The moderating role of resilience
Resilience appeared to represent a significant buffer in the associations between childhood traumatic experiences and psychopathic traits, such that these associations became weaker and nonsignificant (and even negative for boldness) at higher levels compared to lower levels of resilience. Under surveillance: Does Global Positioning System monitoring of offenders reduce recidivism
Appropriate supervision is critical in offender management, but requires effective tools to guide decisions and interventions. This research project investigated the effectiveness of Global Positioning System monitoring in reducing re-offending, while considering the impact of Global Positioning System monitoring on the offender’s well-being. The method consisted of evaluating a matched sample of Global Positioning System monitored offenders ( n …
Surviving Senior Psychopathy: Informant Reports of Deceit and Antisocial Behavior in Multiple Types of Relationships
A prevailing view among researchers and mental health clinicians is that symptoms of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD)/psychopathy decrease as affected individuals reach middle age. In the current investigation, informants were surveyed about the behavior of individuals who they believed showed traits of ASPD/psychopathy and were over the age of 50. A final sample of 1,215 respondents rated the index individuals according to the ASPD/psychop…
Incremental Validity of the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire in the Preemployment Assessment of Police Officer Candidates
Guidelines for screening public safety personnel candidates, including law enforcement positions, incorporate the use of separate psychological tests for assessing normal and abnormal functioning. We evaluated the incremental validity of the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ)—a measure of normal personality traits—beyond the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory–2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF), a measure of psychopathology, us…
The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-IV (MCMI-IV) and Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory-II (Maci-II) in Legal Settings
The MCMI-IV and MACI-II are the most recent iterations of the primary Millon clinical inventories and have become well-established instruments over the course of multiple editions. The MCMI, in particular in its prior editions, and to a lesser extent, the original MACI, have joined the canon of commonly-used psychological instruments in several forensic settings, though they have been met with significant controversy. This controversy is due in l…

The Somatoform Spectrum Within the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology System: A Taxometric Test of the Latent Structure
OBJECTIVE: The general understanding of disorders related to chronic somatic symptoms (e.g., somatic symptom disorder, functional somatic syndromes) is limited because of current categorical conceptualizations in traditional taxonomies. To improve clinical utility and validity, the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology offers an empirically grounded dimensional approach. Therefore, the distribution of persistent somatic symptom distress observ…
The distinction between symptoms and traits in the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP)
The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) is an empirically and quantitatively derived dimensional classification system designed to describe the features of psychopathology and, ultimately, to replace categorical nosologies. Among the constructs that HiTOP organizes are “symptom components” and “maladaptive traits,” but past HiTOP publications have not fully explicated the distinction between symptoms and traits. We propose working de…
Dissociation and false memory: The moderating role of trauma and cognitive ability
The term dissociation is often used to refer to a diverse range of psychological symptoms, including perceptual impairments, emotional detachment, and memory fragmentation. In the present study, we examined whether there was a relation between participants' self-reports of dissociative experiences and their memory performance in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm-a laboratory-based procedure that is frequently used to investigate false m…
Further Validation of the Elemental Psychopathy Assessment – Short Form (EPA-SF) in a Large University Sample
The purpose of the current study was to provide further validation of the short form of the Elemental Psychopathy Assessment (EPA-SF), which was developed on the basis of a general personality model, the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality. This study evaluated the internal structure of the EPA-SF trait scales, and examined the EPA-SF scales against two other psychopathy measures, the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM) and the Expanded Leve…
Predictive Validity of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form Scale Scores in an Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Program
Intimate partner violence intervention programs (IPVIPs) are intended to rehabilitate individuals charged with intimate partner violence (IPV) offenses, but these programs evidence high rates of treatment dismissal and recidivism. Applying the risk-needs-responsivity framework to improve IPVIP effectiveness has been suggested, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) may be used to inform risk estimates …
Factor analysis in psychological assessment research: Common pitfalls and recommendations.
This article provides a summary and discussion of major challenges and pitfalls in factor analysis as observed in psychological assessment research, as well as our recommendations within each of these areas. More specifically, we discuss a need to be more careful about item distribution properties in light of their potential impact on model estimation as well as providing a very strong caution against item parceling in the evaluation of psycholog…

Is psychopathy associated with deficits in bonding in an adult noninstitutionalized sample? The association between intimate social network size, attachment behavior, and psychopathy
The diminished capacity to form bonds is an attribute that has been widely ascribed to psychopathy, particularly the affective domain of the construct. The purpose of the current study was to investigate this hypothesis by examining the association between psychopathy, intimate social network size, and attachment bonds, using self-report measures in a large mixed Australian sample of university students and members of the general community. Our r…
Measurement Equivalence of the Subjective Well-Being Scale Among Racially/Ethnically Diverse Older Adults
Findings suggest that the comparison of latent means (especially for positive and negative affect and self-realization) across racial/ethnic groups is highly questionable. The SWBS should be used with extreme caution when it is applied to diverse racial/ethnic elderly groups for comparison purposes. Implications are discussed in cultural and methodological contexts

Assessment of Competence to Stand Trial
The disciplines of psychology and the law interface most frequently when the issue of competence to stand trial is raised. This chapter begins with consideration of the evolution of legal thinking on competence to stand trial through a review of pertinent case law and statutory criteria. Research on systems issues, attorneys' concerns, and predictors of trial competence is then summarized. Forensic assessment instruments that structure the assess…
Psychological Assessment in Adult Mental Health Settings
Several chapters in this volume address issues related to psychological assessment in adult mental health settings, such as the merits and use of self-report inventories and performance-based tests, neuropsychological and intelligence testing, and cultural influences on the assessment procedure. This chapter provides systematic guidelines for assessing adult inpatients and outpatients. The chapter is organized into five sections. First, we examin…
The effect of stimulus content on volunteering for sexual interest research among college students
Much of the literature on volunteer bias in sexual interest research has been limited to either identifying variables on which volunteers differ from nonvolunteers or examining how the intrusiveness of the measurement device affects volunteer rates. The present study was designed to examine whether stimulus content would affect volunteer rates and volunteer/nonvolunteer differences in a large sample of college students (206 men and 358 women). Th…
