This article focuses on the teaching of the American family via a large lecture course that examines ideology, culture, family, gender, sexuality, race, class and nation through the study of media texts. The course applies a student-focused approach and attends to the material through a cultural studies frame. Owning the Lies
This autoethnography contests notions that family secrets and lies are always disruptive to family cohesion by exploring how secrets and lies hold a family together. Drawing from shared memories, I address my siblings directly to reveal our experiences of navigating our parents’ secrets and lies from each other that contributed to our own adoption of such practices. This autoethnography is about the author’s arranged marriage to a Jewish, Soviet scientist, a transaction meant to release him and his family from their home country at a time when leaving for Jews was nearly impossible. Arranged marriages offered possibility but brought subjective complexities over the ethical and even safety concerns to those involved. This autoethnography pays homage to my mother and all the women who supported each other through the act of abortion. Coming of age in the era of Roe v. Wade, I accessed a legal and safe abortion with my mother's help. My mother who became a nurse during the era of illegal abortions witnessed young women dying at the hands of the state. As a short story "Ars Moriendi," the art of dying, pays tribute to how social science and its methods such as autoethnography can enhance our understanding of life and death. Contrasting the limited medical technologies of the past with the abilities of the present, this story once told to me by my father, an oncologist/hematologist, captures the human element in the act of dying. In his own time: An autoethnographic memorial" pays tribute to how my life partner, "Jake," toiled to rehabilitate his life after great loss and struggle, while rebuilding an old family house. As Jake cleaned the debris and tuck-pointed and laid brick, he also brought back to life a family heritage of honor and justice-"of doing right no matter the consequences." As an autoethnography, Gigi's Tipis experiments with the short-story format as a "new style" of qualitative investigation into family communication. Gigis Tipis presents narrative of family conventions and resistance as experienced by the author and her new family. Narrated by a man looking back at his childhood, The Hermit and the Old Goat is loosely connected to real events. Placing herself in this fictional character's mind allowed the author to explore with distant compassion the results of a traumatic family split. Traumatic Truths and the Gift of Telling
This article explores how three modalities of writing dissertation, memoir, and autoethnography negotiate the tensions between poststructuralist and psychoanalytic notions of truth as experienced by survivors of trauma. Although the nebulous nature of truth contrasts with the healing powers of speaking one's truth, this article argues that autoethnography in its experimentally analytic potential to produce meaning in and out of original contexts …
