Islam, religiosity, and immigrant political action in Western Europe
Political Nationalism and Attitudes towards Immigration: The Interaction of Knowledge and Policy
The issue of immigration is highly salient to citizens of industrialised democracies. Globalisation and the emergence of an international human rights regime, among other reasons, led to high levels of immigration to industrialised countries in recent decades. Immigrant-receiving states have shown only limited ability to control the size and composition of their immigrant population. Immigration has therefore emerged as a prominent political issu…
Women City Leaders and Postmaterialist Values: Gender Differences in Economic Development Priorities
We investigate gender-associated differences in the attitudes of city leaders regarding local economic development priorities. In so doing, we test the thesis that the economic development priorities of women city leaders will reflect postmaterialist values; in other words, women city leaders will place more of an emphasis on quality-of-life issues than do men. We employ results of a survey of more than 150 city leaders in Texas. Our findings off…
Ethnic and Linguistic Minorities and Political Participation in Europe
Understanding the political behavior of ethnic minorities is important for their integration in contemporary European societies. We compare the political participation rates of ethnic and linguistic minorities to those of the majority population using data from the 2002—03 European Social Survey which covers 21 countries in Europe. Using a broad index of participation, we show that the differences between minority and majority groups are virtuall…
Democratic Values, Ethnic Competition, and Electoral Participation in Bosnia
Experiences of the 1992-95 war left a lasting impression on the population of the former Yugoslavia. In this article, the authors have investigated whether or not wartime experiences had an effect on democratic participation in the post-war polity by analyzing social and ethnic variations in voter turnout in Bosnia. They hypothesize that if turnout levels vary significantly across the same cleavages that produced the 1992-95 war, we must conclude…
Activism Gone Shopping: An Empirical Exploration of Individual-Level Determinants of Political Consumerism and Donating
Using data collected from the European Social Survey (made available by the Norwegian Social Science Data Services), we compare the political acts of buycotting, boycotting, and direct monetary donation and examine the different individual-level attributes that determine people to engage in these political acts. Specifically, we examine the individual attributes that best indicate an individual's propensity to engage in these activities. Our main…
In the Eye of the Beholder: The Foundations of Subjective Human Rights Conditions in East-Central Europe
Using cross-national survey data and information on government practices concerning human rights collected in 17 post-Communist states in Central and Eastern Europe, the authors examine the determinants of people’s attitudes about their country’s human rights situation. They find that not all people in countries that systematically violate human rights develop more negative opinions about their country’s human rights situation. However, results s…
