Learning to read with multiliteracies based methodology
Reading literacy is a central concern for the educational community, as it plays a critical role in the holistic development of individuals and the functioning of the modern educational system. This study investigates whether a multiliteracy-based methodology encompassing Basque, Spanish, and English, can more effectively enhance the reading comprehension skills of 1st grade and 2nd grade primary students in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC).…
Educating Agents for Change
Language teaching in the 21st century
Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies introduce the hidden curriculum of marginalized youth into the classroom, ensuring the presence and sustainability of the languages and cultures of these communities. Within this theoretical and pedagogical framework, both translanguaging and Hip-Hop Pedagogies challenge the traditional institutional norms that have historically viewed linguistically and culturally diverse students as deficient. Instead, they prom…
Translanguaging interventions and the construction of the multilingual self through culturally sustaining pedagogies
In this study, we analyse how multilingual students portray themselves, what attitudes do they hold regarding translanguaging pedagogies and how these pedagogies may or not, in reverse, be related to students’ own self-concept as multilingual speakers. The study presents the results of an intervention based on Pedagogical Translanguaging (PT) conducted in a secondary public school with a high rate of students of an immigrant origin. For data coll…
Promoting pedagogical translanguaging in pre-service teachers’ training
In recent years multilingual approaches to teaching have been widely discussed and translanguaging has been proposed as a pedagogy that offers very positive results in many contexts. Overall, the need to reverse monolingual assumptions among teachers and to adapt pedagogical translanguaging to each context has been highlighted. For that purpose, training preservice teachers on multilingualism, translanguaging and on how to transform their educati…
