Learn Something from This: The problem of optional ethnicity on America's Next Top Model
America' s Next Top Model (ANTM), the popular reality television show produced by and starring Tyra Banks, has garnered a sizeable audience over its thirteen seasons. Synergistically marketed to readers of Young People and Teen Magazine, ANTM enjoys an audience of five million viewers mostly from the 18–35 year-old female demographic. This essay explores representations of ethnic and gendered identities constructed through the visual and discursi…

The Date of Horace's First Epode
THE first Epode provides no clear indication of date. We learn only that Maecenas is about to join Octavian on a dangerous expedition and has suggested that Horace should not accompany him, while Horace retorts that he will be unable to enjoy himself in the absence of his patron and would be ready to follow him to the ends of the earth, whatever the danger, in the hope of earning his gratitude. The Epodes were published about 30 B.C. and, perhaps…

Marxism and Culture
It will be useful first of all to recall some dates: 1848-the Communist Manifesto; 1859-Contribution to a Criticism of Political Economy, in the introduction to which Marx made his clearest definition of the materialist conception of history. It was also the year of Origin of Species and the authentication of Boucher de Perthes' handaxes. 'Relics of bygone instruments of labour possess the same importance for the investigation of extinct economic…

Excavation of a Barrow near the Hardy Monument, Black Down, Portesham, Dorset
The barrow whose excavation is described below was situated about 770 feet above Ordnance Datum a hundred yards south of the Hardy Monument on Black Down Hill, Portesham, on the edge of a large gravel pit. In the winning of gravel during the war the face of the pit had been worked round the barrow on both sides destroying the southern half of the ditch and part of the south side of the mound. As the mound was slowly falling into the gravel pit, i…

Azilian Harpoons
It is convenient to begin this study of Azilian harpoons by first considering the Magdalenian harpoons of northern Spain. The two Basque sites of Aitzbitarte, a few miles within the Spanish side of the frontier, and Isturitz, not many miles within the French side of the frontier, are useful in delimiting the Spanish area from the point of view of the fauna. At Aitzbitarte, Harlé (1908) found a great predominance of red deer with one or two odd fr…
The Groove and Splinter Technique of working antler in Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Europe
The excavations carried out between 1949–51 at the Proto-Maglemosian site of Star Carr, near Seamer, Yorkshire, yielded abundant remains of the wild animals hunted during the Pre-boreal stage phase of the Post-glacial period in north-eastern England (J. G. D. Clark, 1949, 1950, 1954). Examination of this material has thrown much light on the methods used to make implements and weapons from the antlers and bones of animals killed primarily for foo…
