  • Structure and Dynamics of Islamic Social Formations (Seventh–Fourteenth Century)

    Jean Batou•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2022•References: 15

From the seventh to the fourteenth century, the Muslim world’s key actors were free peasants working limited and scattered cultivated areas, whose communities paid heavy taxes. A distinct nomadic mode of production dominated the arid lands and their warlike pastoral tribes. Wealthy merchants and artisans controlled urban ideological production, living next to actual ruling classes, who drew exceptional material privileges from their proximity to …

  • Accumulation by Dispossession and Anti-Capitalist Struggles

    Open Access•Jean Batou•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 5

David Harvey has suggested the term accumulation by dispossession to capture the necessarily enduring role of primitive accumulation in the development of mature capitalism, particularly within “the new imperialism.” But this terminological change should be clearly limited, which is not always the case, to an attempt at better qualifying the functioning of primitive accumulation in the history of capitalism as a dependent variable of expanded cap…

  • Pierre Bourdieu et le marxisme de son temps

    Open Access•Jean Batou, Razmig Keucheyan•ARTICLE•Swiss Political Science Review•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The Russian Revolution and ecology (1917-1934), Jean Batou. Why did the ex-USSR's communism also give birth to the ecological catastrophe that is threatening us, from the drying up Aral Sea to the post-Chernobyl potential nuclear catastrophes ? The author distinguishes two periods, before and after 1928. During Lenin's time, scientific ecology could be ex-pressed and even played a role as an interest group. But Stalinism broke its drive and burea…
