• An isthmus of isolation

    Open Access•Nicole E Smith-Guzm ́an, Nicole E Smith-Guzmán•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

OBJECTIVE: This study considers the evidence for elevated frequencies of "rare" diseases in ancient Panama. Indications of population isolation by multidisciplinary sources allow for the possibility that rare inherited conditions may have been maintained at relatively high prevalences in the region due to gene flow restriction. MATERIALS: A sample of 267 skeletal human remains with diverse demographical characteristics from Pre-Columbian archaeol…

  • Intentional dental modification in Panamá

    Open Access•Nicole E Smith-Guzm ́an, Nicole E Smith-Guzmán et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 72

In Panama, the modern practice is restricted to the Ngäbe indigenous people inhabiting the western provinces. Several researchers have posited that Ngäbe dental modification evidences cultural transfer of African origin due to the absence of post-contact records of this practice in the region, and based on the chipping technique used to create a point…

    Open Access•Nicole E Smith-Guzm ́an, Nicole E Smith-Guzmán et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 36

Many Spanish chroniclers detail violent cultural practices of the indigenous populations they encountered in the Isthmo-Colombian Area; however, lack of physical evidence of interpersonal violence from archaeological contexts has made uncertain the veracity of these claims. At the precolumbian site of Playa Venado in Panama, these accounts of violent mortuary rituals may have influenced the interpretation of the burials encountered in excavations…
