Effective leadership across economic contexts
We use a laboratory experiment to study how leaders affect workers’ productivity across economic incentive contexts. In four-person groups, three group members work on a production task, with a fourth member potentially serving as a leader. We vary the economic context by changing how worker pay is determined as a function of worker outputs, comparing Revenue Sharing, Weak Link or Tournament incentives while holding constant the activity performe…

Demand for Commitment in Credit and Saving Contracts: A Field Experiment
We conduct a field experiment in which we offer credit and saving contracts to the same pool of Pakistani microfinance clients. Additional treatments test ex ante demand for soft commitment (in the form of reminders, either to respondents or to their families), hard commitment (in the form of a penalty for missing an instalment) and flexibility (an option to postpone an instalment) to save or pay loan instalments on time. We find substantial dema…
Home-Based Enterprises: Experimental Evidence on Female Preferences from Pakistan
Enterprises run by women in developing countries are largely home based and belong to small-business networks, which may explain these businesses’ small size, low profitability, and short life. Using data from Pakistan, we confirm that the majority of female-owned microenterprises are home based and find that these home businesses are likely to close within 2 years. Our incentivized tasks elicit household preferences for business location and adv…
Urgency and engagement: Empirical evidence from a large-scale intervention on energy use awareness
Adopting LEDs changes attitudes towards climate change: Experimental evidence from China
The adoption of low carbon technologies needs to go hand in hand with an increased awareness of climate change and its consequences and solutions. Attitudes toward climate change are influenced by a variety of factors, most notably educational attainment and exposure to climatic events attributable to climate change. However, less is known about the effect of technology adoption on climate change beliefs and support for mitigating measures. Throu…
Two Sides of the Same Rupee? Comparing Demand for Microcredit and Microsaving in a Framed Field Experiment in Rural Pakistan
We use a field experiment to test whether saving and borrowing satisfy demand for lump‐sum accumulation from regular deposits. Inspired by ROSCAs, we offer different credit and saving contracts to subjects. We find that individuals often accept both credit and saving contract across experimental waves. This behaviour can be rationalised by assuming that individuals seek lump‐sum payments and struggle to hold savings. Structural estimation of this…
E-campaigning on Twitter: The effectiveness of distributive promises and negative campaign in the 2013 Italian election
Recent studies investigated the effect of e-campaigning on the electoral performance. However, little attention has been paid to the content of e-campaigning. Given that political parties broadcast minute-by-minute the campaign messages on social media, this comprehensive and unmediated information can be useful to evaluate the impact of different electoral strategies. Accordingly, this article examines the electoral campaign for the 2013 Italian…
