  • Improving Anal Cancer Screening Messages Through Interviews From Men Who Have Sex With Men

    Open Access•Isabel Thomas, T J Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2026

Anal cancer disproportionately affects men who have sex with men, particularly those living with HIV, yet screening rates remain low. This mixed-methods study examined the acceptability of anal self-exams and companion exams as supplemental screening tools among 131 participants in Chicago, IL, and Houston, TX. Data were collected through surveys and interviews and analyzed using thematic and descriptive methods. Findings indicate strong support …

  • Finding the Right Answer

    Open Access•T J Clark, Tez Clark•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2026

This paper concerns zetetic success , or success in inquiry. Recent work in epistemology largely assumes that zetetic success is a matter of learning the “complete answer” to one's question. Unfortunately, a natural way of understanding this claim renders it false. This paper instead starts with the suggestion that zetetic success is a matter of learning the right answer to one's question, where this claim may be understood as context‐sensitive i…

  • Poussin's Sacrament of Marriage

    T J Clark•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2014

A proper interpretation of Poussin's Sacrament of Marriage , it is argued, should leave the question of the difference between "interpreting" and "describing" open. This is a particularly urgent requirement in the case of painting, whose muteness and ungrammaticalness ought to be respected in writing. A description of Poussin's painting will need to account, at minimum, for three main aspects of the scene: its unexpected arrangement of the centra…

  • For a Left With No Future

    T J Clark•ARTICLE•New left review•2012

An epistle to capitalism’s immobilized opponents from the author of Farewell to an Idea. Drawing on sources from Bruegel to Nietzsche, Hazlitt to Benjamin, T. J. Clark supplies notes for a rethinking of left politics that would recognize the impasses of the present and the horrific legacies of the past, while abandoning the mirages of futurity

    Open Access•T J Clark•CHAPTER•Land, Nation and Culture, 1740-1840•2005

In a letter Poussin wrote to his patron Paul Fréart de Chantelou in April 1639, instructing him how best to come to terms with the new painting Poussin had sent him — patron and painter were at the start of their long relationship, so basic advice was in order — the following phrase occurs. ‘Lisés l’istoire et le tableau, afin de cognoistre si chasque chose est appropriee au subiect.’ 3 (Read the story and the picture, so as to know if each thing…

    T J Clark•ARTICLE•New left review•2000

Postmodernism is typically seen as a recent sequel to modernism. T. J. Clark queries Perry Anderson’s account of the break between them, and concludes that there is more continuity of conditions than meets the eye. It may be too soon to judge whether modernism has passed

    T J Clark•ARTICLE•October•1994•Cited by: 1

    1. We have come a certain way from Abstract Expressionism, and the question of how we should understand our relationship to it gets to be interesting again. Awe at its triumphs is long gone; but so is laughter at its cheap philosophy, or distaste for its heavy breathing, or boredom with its sublimity, or resentment at the part it played in the Cold War. Not that any of those feelings have gone away or ever should, but that it begins to be clear t…

Manet was not in the habit of hesitating before trying to put his large-scale works on public exhibition; he most often sent them to the Salon the same year they were painted. But for reasons we can only guess at, he kept the picture entitled Olympia in his studio for almost two years, perhaps repainted it, and submitted it to the Jury in 1865. In the case of Olympia the vocabulary is not especially forced, since an important part of what spectat…
