This paper constructs a set of criteria for identifying the paradigmatic underpinnings of racial and ethnic relations textbooks. It applies those criteria to 10 books and summarizes the findings. With few exceptions, the textbooks favor assimilationist, cultural pluralist, or eclectic approaches. The debate on the declining significance of race receives little attention.
