  • The Modern Colonial Politics of Citizenship and Whiteness in France

    Tony S Jugé, Michael P Pérez•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2006•Cited by: 17•References: 24

While there is no blatantly racist discourse among the French political class per se, the modern politics of citizenship in France is rooted in France's racialized colonial legacy. Upon critical examination, contemporary French political discourse and policy implementations indeed speak to France's colonial past. The concept of ‘otherness’ is situated at the centre of French political discourse, and is manifested in constructions of whiteness. ‘O…

  • Colonialism, Americanization, and Indigenous Identity

    Michael P Pérez•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 12

This study explores baseline dimensions of identity among Chamorros in Guam, as a case in point of indigenous identity consciousness, in the context of U.S. colonialism, territorial relations, and Americanization. Despite the adverse effects of colonization and Americanization pressures, ethnographic findings suggest that Chamorros are conscious of their indigenous identity with respect to reference-group interaction, political awareness, cultura…

Methods . Using ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis we tested the hypothesis with a probability sample of Guam’s Asian–Pacific high school students. …

    Michael P Pérez•ARTICLE•Amerasia Journal•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Like their indigenous counterparts throughout the world, the Chamorros of Guam endured a legacy of colonization through successive waves of conquest (at the hands of Spaniards, Japanese, and Americans). Moreover, Chamorros possess the distinction of being the first among Pacific Island societies to be colonized who have yet to exercise their inalienable right of self-determination. As part of the spoils of the Spanish-American War, Guam remains u…

  • Interethnic Antagonism In the Wake of Colonialism

    Michael P Pérez•ARTICLE•Ethnic studies review•2000•Cited by: 1

Since the proliferation of scholarship on racial and ethnic antagonism following the Civil Rights era, neo-Marxist, colonialism, and other power-conflict theories reached popularity and have been widely applied to explain racial and ethnic conflict throughout the world, particularly in the United States. However there is a lack of scholarship on racial and ethnic relations in the U.S. territories in general and the Pacific Islands in particular. …
