  • Ipsa and Odong: Decorative metalwork of Korea

Open Access•Paul T Craddock, Paul Craddock et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeomaterials•2023

Inlay and patination are important elements in the prestige metalwork of East and Southeast Asia. There are several regional varieties, but they have many features in common, particularly in the use of a patinated copper alloy containing small amounts of gold. This in turn may suggest a common or at least linked ancestry, but probably no earlier than the sixteenth century. Most of this metalwork is no longer produced, but in Korea, production is …

  • The Metal Casting Traditions of South Asia: Continuity and Innovation

    Open Access•Paul T Craddock, Paul Craddock•ARTICLE•Revista de Fomento Social•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This paper, after outlining some of the more significant milestones through seven millennia of casting achievement and the historic literary sources, will concentrate on the more recent continuing traditional technologies of South Asia. • From hearth to furnace: Evidences for the earliest metal smelting technologies in the Eastern Mediterranean

    Paul T Craddock, Paul Craddock•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2000•Cited by: 40

The first controlled use of fire in metallurgy dates from the eighth millennium ВС, when native copper was deliberately heated to form artifacts. Problems how to distinguish between native copper and smelted copper are addressed, especially what concerns the role of iron in copper. It is shown that the technological roots of metallurgy have nothing in common with pottery kilns. Metallurgy is an independent development. The decisive factor was the…

  • Metal Sources and the Bronzes From Igbo-Ukwu, Nigeria

Paul T Craddock, Paul Craddock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1997•Cited by: 6•References: 20

This paper reports on a brief survey of some old copper and lead workings along the Benue Rift in SE Nigeria. Samples of lead and copper ores collected from these were analyzed to determine their lead isotope ratios for comparison with lead isotope ratios obtained from the bronzes excavated at Igbo- Ukwu. At many of these locations small-scale workings are still in operation. The lead isotope ratios of a small selection of the bronzes suggest tha…
