Reclaiming the translinguistic selves
This study investigates the collaborative inquiry among Korean-English translingual scholars who utilize translanguaging spaces to foster collective agency toward decolonization. We rethink language beyond a mere communication tool, framing it instead as a dynamic process that shapes identities, ideologies, and interpersonal relationships in academia and society. By examining data from three projects – a reading group focused on Asian Critical pe…
Methodologizing Transnationality
How can we take transnationality as a space of in-betweenness to generate new possibilities, moving beyond geographically bounded spans between countries? This article presents five authors' collective inquiry on transnational positionalities, which we practiced through the relational, transformative, and reflective writing of the self in a community space. We staged the collaborative writing into two processes: the emergent process of thematic w…
Negotiating Asian American identities
Voices of the invisible
The objective of this commentary is to call attention to the importance of education policy that promotes Asian American (AA) communities. I argue AA communities have not received enough attention in the domain of education policy primarily due to the stereotypes embedded in the dominant “model minority myth” and “perpetual foreigner ideology.” Furthermore, I discuss how the exclusion and misrepresentation of AA communities lead to civic and poli…
Creating entrepreneurs
This article explores national curriculum change initiated by the South Korean state by examining the 2015 curriculum reform. Relying on interviews with policy actors who participated in the curriculum-making process, I aimed to understand how certain reform ideas within an institutionalized, state-led curriculum change made—or failed to make—their way into official documents. Three main themes emerged from interviews: (a) entrepreneurial vision …
Discursive construction of social selfhood
This study critically analyzes North Korean elementary moral education textbooks published under the Kim Jong-un regime to understand how identities and power are enacted through school curricula. In order to interpret North Korean elementary moral education textbooks, the study reviews a brief history of compulsory moral education in East Asia in the context of Korean ethnonationalism. Three main themes emerge regarding the construction of North…
Pedagogy and Foreignness
Based on my reflections on “being a foreigner,” I explore the boundaries of citizenship education in this essay. I use my foreign identity to articulate how social justice education can perpetuate closed-mindedness in classrooms by moving too quickly to student activism. I situate my experiences and reflections on being a foreigner within previous conversations about notions of certainty and indoctrination in the field of education philosophy, an…
