  • Against Ontology: Chinese Thought and François Jullien: An Introduction

    Open Access•Li Shiqiao, Scott Lash•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 2

François Jullien wants us to see what thought and life could look like without ontology, promising intellectual riches unavailable in the heavy ontological apparatus we are deeply invested in. The strength of Jullien's argument comes from a deep and unique alliance between philosophy and Chinese thought, a risky one - incurring predictable disgruntlement from both philosophy and sinology - but nevertheless enduring and productive. This is far fro…

  • Language, Figure, Landscape in Chinese Thought

    Open Access•Li Shiqiao•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2023•References: 5

Grounded in the use of the visual, Chinese thought and language operate within a wide spectrum that includes calligraphy, poetry, literature, painting, and garden-landscapes. In languages of phonetic signifiers, the spectrum is deliberately controlled to be narrower, excluding the visual from language and delegating it to iconology. These linguistic-cultural strategies have an ancient past and produce far-reaching consequences in thought and arte…

  • Terminating Architecture: Mega-Development in Hong Kong

    Open Access•Li Shiqiao•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper examines large development projects as a function of finance in the context of Hong Kong, taking Kowloon Station as an exceptionally revealing case. Hong Kong's property market is one of the most established in Asia, and it points to the ways in which large-scale development schemes proliferate along efficient and affordable mass transit railway systems with great speed and success. At Kowloon Station, finance redefines architecture; i…

  • The 20-Kilometer University: Knowledge as Infrastructure

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This piece presents the work of academics and architects in a collaborative venture. It provides an architectural design and a series of statements towards the hypothetical creation of an unconventional city centre in the Chinese city of Shenzhen. The idea is to create a linear university that would run the 20-kilometer length of the Shenzhen Strip: the 20K university. The contributors outline, in the diversity of their idioms, a complex spatial …

  • An Analyst’s Couch for Architects

    Li Shiqiao•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2008

Henri Lefebvre’s The Production of Space (1974) brought the plastic power of space to the theoretical foreground, and anticipated a flurry of theorization in architecture in the ensuing decades, eager to provoke an architectural mainstream which is deeply conservative. This architectural conservatism is protected by institutions, and at the heart of these institutions is a body of architectural knowledge – sustained by a grand illusion – that has…

  • Reconstituting Chinese Building Tradition: The Yingzao fashi in the Early Twentieth Century

Li Shiqiao•ARTICLE•Journal of the Society of…•2003

In this paper, I analyze several early-twentieth-century attempts to reprint, edit, and annotate a Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) construction manual, the Yingzao fashi (1103), each one revealing an aspect of the project to define Chinese architecture. As manifested in the research on the Yingzao fashi by a number of Chinese scholars and architects, the project to reconstitute and understand the text was closely connected to broader intellectua…

  • Writing a Modern Chinese Architectural History: Liang Sicheng and Liang Qichao

    Li Shiqiao•ARTICLE•Journal of Architectural Education•2002

This paper delineates a broader intellectual agenda in Liang Sicheng's seminal writings on Chinese architectural history in the 1930s and 1940s, by linking them to the historiographical writings of his father Liang Qichao, an insightful and hugely influential figure in early twentieth-century China. This broadening of understanding of Liang Sicheng's work is vital not only to the understanding of his architectural writings themselves, but also to…
