Global Figures: Tools for Observing and Governing Agricultural Markets (1880s-1940s)
The International Institute of Agriculture and the Information Infrastructure of World Trade (1905-1946)
The International Institute of Agriculture was the first institution to engage in the systematic production and circulation of global data on crops, cultivated areas, and trade flows. This article analyses the process whereby statistical output became recognized as a specific mission of this intergovernmental organization, autonomous from other types of world information systems. We will study the Institute's Bureau of Statistics, looking at both…
Wolf Ladejinsky: Field Trips for a Democratic Countryside
By looking at the life, travels, and work of Wolf Ladejinsky, one of the leading American experts and advisers on agrarian reforms in Asia during the postwar era, this article sheds light on the practices of development experts. Ladejinsky's work shows how the postwar period saw the emergence of a new kind of traveling economist whose task was to engineer and assess the implementation of modernization programs. In particular, the article analyzes…
Marxism before Marxism: Nikolaj Sieber and the birth of Russian social-democracy
The Swiss-Russian economist Nikolaj Sieber was one of the first who wrote about Marx in Russia. In this article we reconstruct the development of his thought by mobilising evidence about the intellectual and political context he lived in. We document his involvement within the Ukrainian national movement of the 1870 s and argue that this closeness was consistent with his take on the capitalist evolution of the Russian Empire. We discuss his impor…
The Microfoundations of Italian Agrarianism: Italian Agricultural Economists and Fascism
By studying the theoretical and empirical work of agricultural economists in pre-World War I and interwar Italy, this article shows that agrarianism was a general paradigm shared across the Italian political spectrum by different political families. Originating in the agricultural crisis of the late nineteenth century, agrarianism was understood differently by different political groups, so that its political meaning changed over time, while the …
Observing Agriculture in Early Twentieth-Century Italy: Agricultural economists and statistics
Agricultural Economists in Early Twentieth-Century Italy describes how Italian agricultural economists collected information about the economy of Italy, between the Giolittian and the Fascist era. The book carefully describes three main forms of economic observation: enquiries, statistics, and farm surveys. For each of these forms of observation, the main participants to the investigation are discussed with their respective agendas, alongside the…
Making Variety Simple: Agricultural Economists in Southern Italy, 1906-9
In this contribution I examine the Italian parliamentary inquiry into the conditions of peasants in the southern provinces and Sicily, usually called the Faina inquiry (1906-9). I focus on how the task of observing the conditions of the peasant was defined, how it was entrusted to agricultural economists, and how they accomplished it. The peasant way of life varied greatly across southern Italy. Knowledge about local varieties and local specifici…
