The beginnings of comparative anatomy and Renaissance reflections on the human–animal divide
This essay is part of a larger research project on Renaissance attitudes to animals. It considers the extent to which early developments in the new field of comparative anatomy were influenced by Renaissance discussions concerning the nature and capacities of animals, compared to those of humans. It mainly focuses on the writings of Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), Andreas Vesalius (1514 – 64), Pierre Belon du Mans (1517 – 64) and Girolamo Fabric…

What happened to Famagusta's Jews following the Ottoman Conquest of 1571
This study is an attempt to follow the fortunes of several members of the Jewish community of Famagusta following the conquest of this town by the Ottomans in 1571. It is firstly based on a comparison between a list of family heads found in Venetian records of the late 1560s and another list included in a census carried out after the Ottoman takeover of the same town. This comparison is completed by Venetian judicial and administrative records of…

Sultanların hasekilerinin artan etkisi ve valide sultan ile haseki sultanların öneminin artmasının Osmanlı devlet sistemini bozduğuna inanılır. III. Murad (1574-95) dönemi bu yönde bir değişimin başlangıç noktası kabul edilmektedir. III. Murad'ın annesi Nûr Bânû Sultan, II. Sultan Se…
Maps of the world for ottoman princes? Further evidence and questions concerning the mappamondo of Hajji Ahmed
The discovery of an unpublished document is here used to propose a new interpretation of the production in Venice of world maps for Ottoman clients. It is suggested that three Ottoman princes had been interested in acquiring maps in Venice in the early 1550s as part of their struggle for succession to Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, and that these maps were different from the famous Hajji Ahmed map, prepared by Giacomo Gastaldi. It is also sugge…

Trading Nations
This book deals with the intricate, and often uneasy relationship which developed between Jews and Venetians, as they struggled to cope with the changing realities of the sixteenth-century Mediterranean world. The fruit of many years of research in the Venetian archives, this volume explores undiscovered aspects of Mediterranean history regarding the involvement of Venetians and Jews in the international maritime trade, Venetian attitudes towards…
Plundering ancient treasures at Bodrum (Halicarnassus)
The document published here is a commercial letter concerned mainly with a tomb discovered at Bodrum, the site of ancient Halicarnassus and of the Mausoleum which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.' The Hospitallers from Rhodes had begun to construct the castle of St Peter at Bodrum in 1407/8. A few stones which had once been in the walls of the terrace surrounding the Mausoleum were apparently being reused in the castle by 1437, …
