Contemporary Urban History: What the Study of Port Cities Implies for Evidence, Methodology, and Conceptualization
Response to Misa
Response to Misa Josef Konvitz Thomas Misa is right to point out that my review of Urban Machinery does not meet his criteria of a good review. I tried to focus my review away from an internal approach, which would indicate its place in and contribution to the scholarly literature, and toward some of the larger issues that are explicitly raised by the book. This is another way to highlight its significance, lifting it above the category of a coll…
What's Wrong with this Picture
Do networks of urban utilities make cities more alike in Europe? What has been the diffusion of urban technologies and models of urban development in both directions between Europe and North America in the twentieth century? How are cities with a high concentration of research and development activities different? To answer questions such as these, Mikael Hard and Thomas Misa have assembled a team of scholars writing mostly about the United State…

Meeting the Challenge of Distressed Urban Areas
The emergence of distressed urban areas in the 1990s was unexpected. Governments have reacted with a series of policy initiatives which have increasingly focused on area-based strategies, partnerships and the formulation of a metropolitan vision. The scale of the problem-up to 20 per cent of the total population may live in distressed urban areas—and the complexity of causes are two factors which have complicated the design and implementation of …

Cartography in France 1660-1848: Science, Engineering, and Statecraft
Redating And Rethinking The Cassini Geodetic Surveys Of France, 1730–750
The geodetic survey of France undertaken by Jacques Cassini and his son, Cassini de Thury, between 1733 and 1744 is conventionally treated as the prelude to the survey undertaken at a greater scale by Cassini de Thury after 1750. A fresh assessment of the available evidence, including the manuscript of a book which Cassini de Thury wrote but never published, leads to the conclusion that there are two Cassini maps of France, one finished in 1744, …
