In Who's Interest? Levirat and Sororat Marriages in Southeastern Turkey
Sororat refers to a man's marriage to his deceased wife's sister, and levirat refers to a woman's marriage to her brother-in-law after the death of her husband. This article explores the gendered reactions to tensions and role confusion in these marriages. Forty-five people who were either currently living, or have recently lived in levirat and sororat marriages were interviewed. We observed that family and kin seem to be equally persistent on fo…

This article presents a feminist analysis of honor killings in rural Turkey. One of the main goals is to dissociate honor killings from a particular religious belief system and locate it on a continuum of patriarchal patterns of violence against women. The focus of this article is the link between recent or imminent separation and violence against female partners. First, various bodies of literature are reviewed to establish the fact that separation heightens the risk of violence. Mainstream Neglect of Sexual Harassment as a Social Problem
Coverage of sexual harassment was analyzed through articles published in twenty journals between 1986 and 1994. analysis covered 914 issues and over 4,500 articles from Canada and the US. Results showed a clear neglect of the topic in the mainstream, while sexual harassment articles appeared almost exclusively in gender-based journals. Androcentric biases and traditional fears about claims-making activities are offered as reasons for this neglect…

There are at least three views about the role of dominance in task groups. According to one view, dominance leads to \ninfluence. In contrast, the performance view suggests that task cues will be the basis of influence hierarchies in task groups. The third conceptualization, social roles, considers the link between gender and the evaluation of behavioural styles of the interactants. This study examines some well-known attributional tendencies in a unique situation. Specifically, it examines attributions for the unexpected fall of a Canadian hero, Ben Johnson, who was stripped of his Olympic gold medal for the use of anabolic steroids. The results reveal a reversal of the fundamental attributional bias and the use of base rate information in observers' attributions. The findings are interpreted and discussed in terms of Pyszc…

The present study addresses the relationship between status characteristics and task cues. In addition, it explores how cognitive information-processing models apply to simultaneous effects of diffuse status and demonstrated confidence.
