Gender and Struggles for Equality in Mining Resistance Movements
This article explores the intersections of gender and centre–periphery relations and calls for theoretical and political involvement in gendered struggles against colonial and capitalist forces across different national contexts. The article raises questions about the possibility of resisting inequality and exploitation arising from capitalist expansion and extraction of natural resources in Sweden and Greece, outside of urban contexts. It does s…
Arbetslivsetnologi Professioner i nyliberala organisationer
During the entire 20th century, interest in work and work life as a cultural phenomenon was central to the development of Ethnology as an academic discipline: from an interest in the work and tools of peasant communities, to extensive research on different occupational cultures, including working class ones, to a focus on the processes of professionalization and on policy changes that have an impact on working life. However, with labor market cha…
Att välja sin tid
Women still work part time in a much larger extent than men in Sweden and other European countries. The article describes worker’s experiences of the will of municipalities to introduce full-time work as a norm in care. In a society where the individual is considered to be able to fully choose her living conditions, choosing to work part-time or full-time becomes part of manifesting ideas of free individuals. Intentions to increase full time work…
Between activity and solidarity
The expected costs of population ageing have generally led to perceived needs to postpone the age of retirement. Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews, the aim of this paper is to describe the ways that the possibility of an extended working life is comprehended by persons over the age of 60 living in sparsely populated areas in northern Sweden. While defining themselves as active, the interviewees argued strongly in favour of the right to ret…
The moral geographies of public sector job relocation
Previous research has pointed to the fact that ideological images of geographies are bound up with the ongoing struggle for economic and social resources, and that moral values and emotions are central in rendering such images intelligible and accepted. To explore this further, we critically engage with the ways in which moral values and emotions contribute to the (re)production of centres and peripheries in the Swedish news press reports of publ…
Resisting ‘overing’
Gruvboom och gruvkamp
This article is based on a pilot study where I used ethnographic and media studies approaches to examine how contemporary movements and struggles are interwoven with aspirations for a sustainable countryside. My specific interest in this article is the demonstration against the prospecting for a mine in Gallok / Kallak west of Jokkmokk in Sápmi. The demonstration against the prospecting that started in the summer of 2013. I followed the developme…
När genusforskningen blir ett hot mot jämställdheten
In this article, we study a current phenomenon where gender studies comes to be formulated as a threat to gender equality. In order to deconstruct how such an argument is discursively constructed, we analyse an opinion piece, published in the Swedish paper Göteborgs-Posten in April 2012 by Professor Bo Rothstein. He writes that the government in its efforts to focus on gender equality has invested significant resources in gender research in Swede…
En berättelse om risk, en berättelse om genus
During the winter of 2010/2011 the town of Östersund with 60 000 inhabitants was struck by a water crisis. High levels of the parasite Cryptosporidium were discovered in the drinking water. The water delivered by the municipality suddenly constituted a risk for the populations’ health. To consume the infected water could lead to long term stomach illness. This article explores sense-making of risk in everyday life during the time of the Cryptospo…
Fantasi som diskursteoretiskt begrepp och etnologiskt blickfång
This article reviews the possibilities for utilizing the concept of fantasy in studies combining discourse theory and ethnology. It considers the Lacanian concept of fantasy that has been worked into socio-economic and cultural analysis by Jason Glynos, David Howarth and Joan Wallach Scott. The author suggests that the concept of fantasy could make analytical contributions for answering questions of why subjects get caught up in, and are gripped …
A Fantasy of the “Ambitious Young Girl” as Flexible Knowledge-worker Subject
One of the paradoxes of the so-called flexible work environments of late capitalism is that, at the same time as tribute is paid to organizational and work-force flexibility in terms of increased empowerment and freedom for workers to make their own decisions, there is also a strong emphasis on controlling their work. These ways of governing and controlling work have been problematized within critical organizational studies and analysed and conce…
Moving central knowledge to a northern periphery
Through the means of Swedish relocation politics, the capital of Stockholm has been constructed as a governing centre with the ability of giving something to a periphery thought of as unable to survive on its own. The relationship between centre and periphery, furthermore, produces images of what kind of knowledge can be located to "central" or "peripheral" regions. In this article I research the move of a knowledge‐intense government agency from…
From ethnographic ‘self’-discovery to processes of identification
Descriptions of the research experience are vital to ethnography and have often been mediated through the writings about the researcher ‘self’. Consequently, the concept of self has taken up a central position in literature on ethnographic work. In order to renew the discussion on the ethnographic researcher position, I intend to explore further what status is given to such descriptions and notions of self. In this article I analyse how researche…
