An Introduction to the Field of Catholicism in Korea and a Guide to Recent Research on the Subject
Korean Catholicism has a fascinating and dynamic history. And in part because of this, the history of Catholicism in Korea is receiving more attention in English‐language scholarship. This article therefore introduces the major English‐language sources on this topic that have been published between 2014 and 2024 while also identifying future directions for research
An Chunggŭn
In An Chunggŭn: His Life and Thought in his own Words, Jieun Han and Franklin Rausch provide a complete translation of all of An's writings and excerpts from his trial and appeal. Though An is most famous for killing Itō Hirobumi, the contents of this volume show that there was much more to him than that. For instance, far from being anti-Japanese, An thought deeply about how China, Japan, and Korea could work together to build a regional peace t…

Catholics and Anti-Catholicism in Choson Korea
A study of Korea’s first significant encounter with Western civilization, this work analyzes how Koreans reacted to Catholicism imported from China at the end of the 18 th century. It explores the reason most Koreans, especially Confucian scholars and government officials, reacted negatively to Catholic ideas and practices, going so far as to launch an official persecution of Catholics that cost thousands of lives. To render visible the philosoph…

Suffering History
Suffering is a human universal experienced within distinct historical contexts that poses an especially serious theological challenge to Christians: how does one reconcile suffering with belief in an omniscient, omnipotent, and just God? This article will explore how Korean Christians have developed theodicies, attempts to explain this apparent contradiction, that speak to their particular historical contexts by surveying the thought and actions …
The Bishop’s Dilemma
Bishop Gustave Mutel (1854–1933) has been criticized for condemning An Chunggŭn (1879–1910) for assassinating Itō Hirobumi (1841–1909). This rejection of An’s actions has led not only to scholarly criticism, but to a struggle within the Catholic Church between conservative and progressive Catholics over how authority is exercised. This debate, connected to power and framed by nationalism, at times overlooks Bishop Mutel’s own worldview. Therefore…
The Harbin An Jung-Geun Statue
The Chinese and South Korean governments have recently announced the building of a new monument to An Jung-Geun in Harbin. An is most famous for his 1909 assassination of Ito Hirobumi, a high Japanese official who framed the Meiji constitution, served as prime minister, and is credited with being one of the great modernizers of the Meiji period. Ito also led Japan's colonization of Korea and negotiated the Treaty of Shimonoseki with Li Hongzhang,…
Like Birds and Beasts
In 1839, on the twelfth day of the fourth month, after suffering torture and an imprisonment of three years, Magdalene Kim Ŏbi, a commoner widow in her sixties, was beheaded for practicing Catholicism. As an elderly widow, she was supposed to receive special protection from her government. How then did the Chosŏn state justify killing her? In order to answer this question, this article will survey public proclamations against Catholicism issued i…
Visions of Violence, Dreams of Peace
An Chunggŭn is frequently portrayed as having killed Itō Hirobumi primarily out of a sense of wounded nationalism. However, in this article I argue through a close reading of An’s unfinished prison essay, A Treatise on Peace in the East, and relevant court records, that in addition to nationalism, Catholicism, Confucianism and Asianism played an important role in shaping An’s worldview and convincing him that killing Itō was not only justified, b…
